I am starting to think that the so called southerly trade winds dont exist. Last years comp had no wind. Fingers crossed for wind at the event this year.

Us Cairns locals are also starting to wonder if the SE trades still exist. Last year and this year so far have been very ordinary. I've only had two decent sessions in the last six weeks. There has been many 25/30 knot days out on the reef but we just haven't been getting anything at the beaches. It's actually about 10 knots NE at the moment which is usually more like our Summer patterns. From tomorrow we are expecting SE 15/20...........if you believe the weathermen.
Fingers crossed it's just a late start to the season
Sorry to hear about your lack of wind FlySurfer. I'm over it too. My girl's happy though since I'm finally getting plenty of chores done around the house. Bring it on Huey.

Certainly been strange patterns recently. NE 10-12kts yesterday, and still a dozen hardy kiters out at Yorkeys. I could see them from where I was - nearby beach that's less well known but works well in a NE.

Kiteweek is set in the best time of year for wind. it's probably not a dead cert like Gero, but one of the best places in OZ for a comp around this time of year. You can bag our dirty brown water at Yorkeys, but still, it's warm. And so, on most occasions, is the reception you'll receive from the locals.

The new cable park that has opened means there's still a chance to practice in any weather. 5 mins from the kite beach, at least there's a plan "B".
The apres kite activies from Kiteweek last year take some beating - wind or not!

Locals told me it was weird too “Ha mate u just missed it, it was 20-35 last week”, kept trying to get out to a cay with Kite Rite, but the wind never picked up.

Then after the locals told me that it would be at least +5kn in green island I figured 8kn at Cairns airport + 5kn = 13kn... I can do 13kn.

So I payed $504 for a night at the resort. I get there and there's some wind, and the life guards say it will pickup in the arvo. But what nobody told me is that the only possible launch area is on the North side of the island and in a Southerly (the norm) u can't launch cos it's shielded by the freaking trees.

The wind did pickup to around 14kn but I couldn't launch. Agggrrr.

Wait there's more.

So I figured I would drown my sorrows on the all Japanese island ... $8 for a crown! And dinner was **** and cost $180! Reheated crap.

Screw Green Island I hope it gets flattened!

I think I met you on the beach that day Flysurfer. I was there on the Island with the 14 Vegas, 17 Fuel and blonde wife.
When I got back from the island that day I got a session in on the skimboard and 14 back at the mainland. It peaked at about 9.5 knots in an unexpected arvo seabreeze In retrospect, I should have launched with the 14 and skimmer at the north point of the island. I agree with you that the resort should be flattened - overpriced and underdelivers on everything. Having said that, there's nothing but green arrows nearly all the time. www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/qld2.asp A day trip is the way to go. Yesterday's graph was 20kts + from 4am-midnight.
I feel really sorry for you, having limited time up here and not coming across any wind. I had the same experience in Byron Bay, The Gold Coast, Thailand, Broome and Holland. Unfortunately it's the nature of the sport.
I found this link which may be helpful to anyone else looking to plan a kiting holiday. This particular link is for the Cairns area, but you can find the stats on plenty of places world wide on this site as well. www.windfinder.com/windstatistics/cairns_airport?utm_source=www.windfinder.com&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=redirect

Ben!

How's it going buddy?
12 days no wind that crap only happens to me.

I checked windfinder way back in March to see when the best time in winter would be to go and as u can see June scored 64% only better times are Nov. & Apr.

Anyway it's looking good this Saturday in Sydney for a nice ass freezing session.

Later.

The launch for Green Island is the SE corner but requires a tide of 1m+ or it's cut me up on the reef time. We currently have a 20 to 25 knot forecast and only getting 10 knots at the beach. By far the worst year we have had in the past 12 years I have been sailboarding/kiting. It's driving me up the wall!!!!

Green Island caters for the japanense tourist market and is an absolute ripoff!!

Australias best kiter who can afford a week off to fly up to cairns. I am sure Adam will be going from perth during a brake from chiropractic studies to defend his title of australia's best. I am sure everyone from around australia will be there especially after all the positive reports on the great wind.
Ill be in sydney myself

I'm revelling in my status as Australia's most Mediocre Rider - staying at home and riding with some friends and not hauling my arse off to windless Cairns. My goal is to work my way up to Australia's Most Inept Rider before the summer kicks in again. The winter sessions are getting a little chilly though...

Hey, last year at Kiteweek was awesome -- yeah, the wind was a bit disappointing but we did get three days of really good wind in a week and there wasn't a day that went by that wasn't awesome fun. There is so much to do there and the vibe with that many kiters around is just a heap of fun no matter what ya do. There's go-karting, (JB Hackett himself even came and raced with us one night! Top bloke!) Of course, bungee jumping in all varieties -- wanna try 250m jump from a parasail? -- the clubs are great fun, there's something going on at Gilligans (kitemovies, dance parties, etc) nearly every night and the city never sleeps. Now with the new cable park, there'll be even more. Bruce and the organisers did a fab job. Bet you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who was there last year that didn't enjoy it. And hey, with the stats on the wind, the odds are it's gotta pick up again soon, eh? ;-) Cheers, hope ta see ya there -- Robbo
