Hey,
I'm travelling on the east coast from sydney to cairns and I just arrived in Airlie Beach, untill now i didn t have any problem to jump in the water and ride for several hours, but today i was watching the nice yellow board that explains about jellyfish and that scared me a little bit cause I didn't see anyone the water.
So how do you kite in this period? You don't mind and hope you don't fall at the wrong moment or you wear a suit even if the water is hot, or you don't kite anyways?

Full body lycra stinger suit - not hot, but protects you from the stingers.

they're the irrikanji (sp?) jelly fish. very deadly and really hard to see
The other dangerous ones are the box jellyfish. Can be deadly and also really hard to see

I think a study was done to show vinegar as ineffective. Really really really hot water (as hot as you can take it) is meant to be the best solution from what i remember reading....

yeah I saw a similar study and yes it looked as though it worked but im not sure your gunna want to take a thermos full of hot water down the beach in 32 degrees and 80% humidity every day....? from what I understand and have personally experienced is that when you get stung and have tenticles still stuck to you (which happens often) we use the viniger initially to stop the small barbs on the tenticle from stinging then pull them off gently to prevent them from getting stuck in the skin and further irritating you. I also read somewhere that razorblades had been used to ensure the small barbs are out of the skin (like shaving) in bad stings. We have a PVC Pipe on a pole at the SLSC that has two bottles of viniger in it that is topped up ..... generally by us and SLSC members that have a need for it as well as public now and then. adults tend to get off lightly depending on severity of stings but children are the ones to keep an eye on and away from the water in the tropical climates, there have been instances of 16 YO taken away in Ambo to be treated due to their severe reaction to the sting. stinger suits are a must and save us from really bad stings every other day.

Hot water is the latest treatment for blue bottle stings ,the jelly fish we get down south (not sure about stingers and box jelly fish in NTH Oz) and yes it works last year i had a blue bottle wrapped around my throat .Went and saw the lifeguard who sent me to the hot shower and said hop in and have a bit of cold water with the hot and turn the cold down to as hot as you can bear.10 min shower ,pain gone from jelly fish and back in the water (pain from jelly fish replaced by pain from 3rd degree burns only kidding)

didn't anyone warn you about all the nasties we have here in oz like sharks, crocks ,snakes ,funnel web ,redback and whitetail spiders, poleboarders

Get a stinger suit

the heat from the hot water de-natures the proteins from the sting, which means its stops working.. and stops hurting (or something like that)

Question though, what about your face/hands/feet do the full body suits also cover those areas?

Im heading to Broome in late April and i have heard they are there that time of the year, is this true?

I dont know if the box jelly fish are as far down as Arlie beach, but if they are (which by the sounds of it they are - ie yellow signs and no one swimming) then you SHOULD NOT enter the water without a full body suit.

If the sting from a box jelly fish does not kill you, it will put you in bed for months , as it will screw up your body very badly. You probably wont be kiting for years.

Dont risk it..... ask around.

A full body suit will protect you fine.

Irikunji are less dangerous but the sting is so painful you'll be on max doses of Morphine for 3 or 4 days and still be in a lot of pain. Someone once said the pain is so extreme the ambulance drivers don't bother to put the sirens on because the screams will make most cars move out the way.

I live in NSW so am ignorant abot box jellys, but I always thought that a sting from them is often fatal, and one of the worst ways to die.

Wow you guys in the NT must be hard or the box in your parts differ to those that frequent our waters. The Box around our parts can and do kill. The irikanji are apparently the lesser of the two evils and can make you quite sick (have also caused fatalities) but to be stung by an adult box can be fatal.

www.underwatertimes.com/news.php?article_id=18954603710

Quoted from the above link.

"It was the 70th fatality from box jellyfish stings in Australia since 1884, the last being in 2003."

and from the same article

"Box jellyfish is the world's most venomous animal, it can kill in three minutes," said Dr Lisa-Ann Gershwin, Surf Lifesaving Australia's national marine stinger adviser.

An article on NT and Box Jellyfish stings.

www.health.nt.gov.au/Agency/News_Archive/Top_Enders_warned_as_box_jellyfish_stings_put_3_in_hospital/indexdl_153.aspx

To tell people to HTFU/teaspoon of concrete/man up etc is just irresponsible to say the least, especially to those who know very little about them, the protective measures required if they choose to enter the water and the correct first aid procedures if stung.

I am not attempting to be a smart arse in reply to your comments but if some uneducated person was to heed your information and become ill or even worse die from a box sting, well............

I heard that urine works for blue bottles - true? (serious question, not taking the pis). Obvious advantage is that it is available.

I once lost my board in current and had to body drag about 20 minutes through blue bottles. I usually kite in a shortie at that spot, but I had brough the wrong suit and was in my full suit (cursing before hand, kinda pleased later!) Still got stung on my feet, hands, face and neck. Wasn't that bad, but did have vinegar handy which worked.

Gumby........do you sit down to p%^s or what ?

On numerous occasions all of us that kite up here have been stung and treated stings.( maybe they werent life threatening ) but they hurt yeah. we are also advising parents to keep their kids out of the water. we know the dangers and we activly try to inform the unsuspecting people and to protect them from the potential risks involved with being in the water at this time of year.
My second post was a little more serious and the third ...well I thought a link to an informative site may educate people a little better on these dangerous aquatic creatures.

I was (i thought) being obvious that I was mucking around due to the

and what with 2 crocs (one 3mtr and one 2.5mtr) swimming past us on the beach a week ago mixed with box jelly's ............some say its silly some say thats hard core doesnt matter what people say we just love kiting and nothing is going to stop us from doing what we love. My views and thoughts are not expected to be taken in any way as gospel either.......

I'm a marine biologist that has lived and worked in the water in North Queensland for the last 20 years or so.

Simple answers:

Prevention much better than cure for jellyfish stings. Wear the lycra suit once into summer with air temps above 30C and water temp above 26C or so. No need for hood and gloves etc unless you are kiting right in a mangrove creek and plan on falling off a lot.

Bluebottles - ice first aid.
Cubomedusae (box, irukanji, tamoya, etc) vinegar first aid, stand by with CPR, get medical help asap.
Other marine sintings (stingray, stonefish, COTS, etc) hot water immersion.

Box jelly by far the most deadly - you need 700cm linear length of sting to kill an adult...the average large box is trailing about 30m of tentacles in 4 clusters on each side of the box. They are a mangrove animal and don't really like rough water.

Irukanji are found from the coast to the reef but pretty rare. A sting will still put you in hospital for a couple of days on IV morphine. The joke is "the box kills you in 5 mins, the Irukanji makes you wish you were dead".

Slip into your purple lycra suit and keep on kiting!

Avoid mangrove areas - crocs there too.

Andy

I went for a kite on Tuesday and there was heaps of blueys in the water.. I avoided getting stung directly. but when self launching my kite i picked up a lot of dead ones of the beach in my lines. after my session i rolled up my lines and picked of all the tentacles. then i rubbed my tummy, face, legs, arms, neck, sack and this was the outcome..didn't hurt at all but really really itchy..

Apologies to you Hedges I obviously did not interpret your first post as a piss take I hope the chap who originally posted didn't think the same. I just wanted to highlight the possible consequences if stung.

nice try GF but i think once the ring goes on the finger all saliva dries up LOL

vinegar actual lessens the trigger point on the tenticale that pumps in the poison so it does help but with great caution
