straight onshore with swell can be hard.
i remember beating myself up in sylt in 1995 when, due to marginal straight onshore wind and a relentless pounding closeout shorebreak, i failed to get out to the start of my slalom heat (windsurfing). i was somewhat consoled to see (if my memory serves me correctly) robert teriitehau, patrice belbeoch, and robby naish fail to make it out to the following heat (at which point racing was cancelled, giving me a dnf and those guys a rerun the next day, not that i'm still bitter

moderate conditions make everyone look more similar. extreme conditions (light, strong, choppy, etc.) magnify differences, and tend to teach us a lot. keep at it.
