Hola amigos,

The next issue of KBM will feature Martin Vari in our "Your Call" section.

This section of the magazine allows everyone the chance to post questions on seabreeze.com.au

We then put the chosen questions to the featured personality and print them with your seabreeze user name in the mag.

Martin Vari is a twice world champ, pioneer of the sport in the waves and has recently launched his own kite company - Vari Kites. He is known for charging massive Teahupoo and is on a constant mission to push the limits of waveriding with a kite.

So guys and gals - start posting those questions!

KBM

Hi Martin,

What do you find more thrilling in the surf. - Going deep in a great barrell, or riding the face of a monster?

in a lot of pics of you kitesurfing I notice that the kite is back (behind the wave). is this due to the sheer wave power keeping you ahead or is it on purpose. I find that if I do this in strong wind it pulls me off the wave ....
1. where is the ideal position for the kite once on the wave
2. do you use the kite to pull you into the barrel or do you surf into it and the kite follows
love your Teahuppo shots

In "Spare Change" you rated getting smashed at Shipsterns as "the worst wipeout of your life", have you been rumbled by anything harder than that since?

You looked pretty messed up after it, did you find or see anything interesting when you were down there?

Hi Martin

Nice spot .So you've been dredged out again by your old mates at KBM .onya .
Whatdaya reckon about this idea ,that they interview some of the other dudes out there (that we dopn't know much about) rippin like that afro guy that's doin some really loose stuff in cabo verde ,cabarete or whatever its called (he was the guy that was gettin some press here on seabreeze a while back on a wave kiting thread ) or maybe some of the loose units out there like Col in newcastle .the guys the wrong side of 40 but **** he rips in the waves !Something a bit more out there and original .
Sorry man just got back from playing over the hill soccer and a few lagers .Dont wanna offend .you're great and it'll be nice to see what you've been up to and your take on things, don't get me wronggood luck with your brand, what are your kites like?

Who is the most exciting kiter to watch in the waves?

Should we be riding waves like a surfer (i.e. Ben Wilson), or developing a more kite-specific style (i.e. Mitu)?

What does a VARI kite offer the average rider that the bigger more established brands havent managed to find yet....... in an industry with so many brands now?

Who actually designs your kites?
Have you poached a designer from another company?

OR are they designed by the riders for the riders

Good luck with your new venture and if you push it anywhere near as hard as your riding, im sure they'll be sweet

In the Tahiti section of the movie spare change you got a little gay on us with all this "finding yourself " crap.. are you really like this or was it the producers idea to make the movie more appealing to chicks and people like sandgroper..

What do you find is lacking in today's kites when waveriding and how would you improve on that?

After all those waves and places, what would you call a 'good session' now??

Does it get lonely being on tour and famous? Or do you always have friends around?

Where do you see yourself going in the future (1, 5, 10, 20 years) - in the way you kite, and what else you're doing?

Thanks, keep smiling and keep those great wave rides coming for us mortals to worship!!

Martin,

What is the key to dealing with closeout sets ( in big surf ) when making your way out the back..Often you can have a wall of water or 6ft of angry pounding whitewater coming at you which you need to get past.... ... I have attemted the following with these results:

Boost over the wave - if it is onshore you end up further down wind and have to do it again.

Turn around - works but just delays the enivitable.

Stop and sink - seems to work best for me ( keep tension in the lines and almost duckdive the wave ) but not so good when using a surfboard as it is hard to hold the board and the kite at the same time whilst duck diving.

I have even tried just charging straight into the face of the wave with the idea of punching out the otherside...needless to say I have NEVER tried that again.

Any tip or pointers in dealing with this would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck in 09

Sorry no video available....
but you know those guys in the circus who jump ( belly flop ) from the top of the big top into a kiddys pool with about half a foot of water ....well that is what it felt like with the headache and massive winding to match...
I only penetrated the wave by about a foot and then got sucked straight up and over the falls for a massive slamming.

What are you doing to make sure there is no problems with your kites and materials?
Everyone does heaps of testing but i have found and have been disappointed when buying first generation kites in recent years only to find little problems arising. Because of this, I have said I will never buy a 1st gen kite until I see how its refined the next year. Even after flying them myself as you cant test durability in an hour on the water.
