Hi every one at the WAKSA meeting last night the commitee passed a motion endorsed by the WAKSA commitee and the Cottesloe working group to move the kite set up and rigging spot at the phone Box 70 m South to Rosendo Street. This means all kiters must set up and rig their kites 70m South of the phone Box, on the beach at at Rosendo Street or South of that point. We will be putting up KIte NO RIGGING signs at the phone box site. I will also place a map at the phone box of the new kite rigging spot.

SO PLEASE no set of kites on grass at Phone box
No access by kites at phone box
All kite set up ON THE BEACH South of Rosendo Street down ramp.
Please keep clear of the windsurfers
Please keeep 30m away from all beach users.

Please tell all kiters of our new rigging spot and if you see kiters at the phone box please inform them of our move. The WAKSA commitee has only decided to move all kiting out of the phone box area because of the actions of the cottesloe Council to BAN ALL KITING IN THE COTTESLOE SHIRE ALTOGETHER. We feel the Phone Box site has a major kite site is TOO PUBLIC.

There has been talk that the council will require all kiters to have WAKSA membership/ wear tags/flags off kites, or No kiting at any Cottesloe site because of public liability issues. WAKASA is trying to avoid council passimg bylaws to prevent or restrict any kiting in Cottesloe shire.

Please call Jonathan Keys on 040 888 5811 or contact any WAKSA commitee member/ Ian Young/ Ian Grose etc if you need any more info.

does this mean no kiting in front of the phone box? or can we kite 30m from shore in that area. Note that the waves probally break only 15-20m off shore. Can we kite at issolators and the cove?

You know as well as i do that it only takes a couple of of the tops to cover 30-50 m and we will be down infront of the phone box.

Could you please clearly define what WAKSA mean by a kite exclusion ZONE.

this now means that more kiters will be squashed into a smaller area, very safe not!

Anyway thanks guys for all your work cant be nice dealing with agro kiters/rangers/wives and rabid dogs.

shane

from what i under stand and i could be mistaken

Port beach to the foot bridge is a board sport exclusive zone over the summer months (same as from the cott groyne to north cott surf club), this is never really policed that much because you always see surfers in the water.

is leighton beach in the shire of Freo? or cott?

Leighton is City of Freo.

Once you have setup and launched between Salvado St and Rosendo St you can kite anywhere as long as you don't piss people off and you come back in where you took off from HOWEVER, be aware of the actaul law:

DPI Marine Operations normally have jurisdiction from the low water mark out and the local government have the beach, etc. In the case of Cottesloe they have the "Govenor's approval" to extend their jurisdiction 200m out beyond the low water mark. The current by-law allows "water craft" ie windsurfers, kite surfers, surf skis etc to launch within designated areas but they must then operate beyond the 200m. Offenders may be fined and/or have their gear confiscated.

Legal arguments, "that's bull****" comments, etc are not helpful no matter what you think. Read the letter from the Town of Cottesloe on the WAKSA forum. We have a limited opportunity to negotiate an agreed set of requirements if we wish to kite in Cott. Any useful suggestions should be made to the Cott working group (Jonathan Keys) or WAKSA ([email protected])

OK!
Now we have to launch away from the widest part of the beach.
We loose the shelter of the dune.
There is frequently much more weed build up on the southern part of the beach.
If it is low tide the reef south of the dune is quite nasty.
My question is, how does this actually make the council any happier?
According to these guidelines, are we able to surf a wave, turn and go for a jump?......because this all happens well within 30m of the beach!

Go down to Cott and look at the map, I plonked a map of the new launch spot at phone box tonight, the new launch spot is 70 m South of the phone box, the widest part of the beach in that area, I have never seen any seaweed in this location( I have crashed into the seaweed on many occasions North of the Phone box at least 20 times with a variety a kitemares as a result) I have kited this location for 3 years and I can say the new spot is FAR better overall. Deeper on the inside, better waves out side and few public. I kited here , and still do for 12 months before I drifted down to the phone box in the last 8 months, and only drifted down to the phone box to have a chat to Matty, Carl, Aussie, Shane, Mike B , Ray , Russell, steve etc as a social chit chat.

If we stay off the beach and kite on the water only we have 90 % less contact with the public, just launch and land at Rosendo Street if Possible. If we kite from Rosendo we will pass by Phone box well out to sea.

My understanding is:

Leighton (everything south of the walk bridge) is Freo.

Dog Beach (north of the walk bridge and a bit further) is Mosman Park.

Then it's Cott.

So basically, as far as Fremantle Council is concerned, it's all a no-go zone in summer months, anywhere in their council.

Freedom where is our freedom these regulations sound like there just going to cram everybody into one area. What is the point of sailing in between people all day and getting bitched at this is sposed to be a freestyle sport if u want to sail up and down all day go windsurfing.

Its not that bad I sailed it (the new area) Fri/Sat its just going to cram us riding at cott a tiny bit more (as if we wern't in the first place) if we were banned then we would be forced to move creating crowds in other areas
the only real hassel is the narrow launch area but hey moving 70-100 mtrs south is a small price to keep this location

just keep it safe.

If this storm comes through today we may get some banks down at leighton .This will be the place to go for winter then .
Avoid Cott in the westerlies there isn't enough margin for stuff ups , was out there yesterday in light winds and ended up on the beach a few times .

While walking the dog tonight I watched a regular landing his kite with assistance in front of Salvado st. Problem was that the catcher had to be on the plants on the dunes, as there's no beach there........see my previous comment.

Don't get me wrong, I applaud the cool heads who are negotiating with the ranger, but really, destroying the dune further up the beach is not going to endear us to anyone.
