Herrison island!!!!

You mean the river!!!!!

They bring the KPWT to Perth and then run it on the river!
I'm sorry but that seems like such a waste.

Oh well I'm looking on the bright side and thinking at least they will be keeping WA's excellent kitesurfing a big secret from the international public. I cant imagine we will be overrun with hoards of foreign kiters after they have seen footage of a gusty flat 12 kts [if they are lucky] on a muddy river when unseen by viewers, just 15 mins drive away, there was the blue ocean, waves and sideshore 20kts.

Yeah...not too many bright sparks out there.
I suppose they are doing it there for the public? If so, the public are not going to be getting much! Hope im wrong though.

OH WELL, LEAST WE WONT MISS OUT ON ANY OF THE WAKEBOARDING ACTION BY DRIVING TO THE COAST....
GOING ON LAST YEAR THE ATMOSPHERE WAS AWESOME AT THE RIVER FOR THE EVENTS.
THE COMPETITORS WILL JUST HAV TO USE BIG KITES.
WONDER IF THEY WILL LET THE KITERS USE THE SLIDERS THEY HAD LAST YEAR, NOW THAT WOOD BE COOL.
THE WIND WILL BE LIGHT, BUT GOING ON ALL THESE NEW REVOLUTIONS OF KITE TECHO THERE WILL BE NO PROBLEMS

We organised a Kiting demo at the four wheel drive and outdoor show 3 or 4 years ago, just near Herisson Island.

It certainly made the sport look a joke. There was wind but just so gusty it looked very average.

The demo also included a swim and a rescue.

It was no real surprise that we did not do well with our stand and have not been back to the show again.

PLEASE not on that part of the river.

sorry cant hold back anymore

THIS IS A ****EN JOKE WE HAVE SOME OF THE BEST LOCATIONS ON THE COAST IN THE WORLD AND THEY WHO EVER WANT TO RUN A ****EN WORLD TOUR EVENT IN THE WORST PART OF THE RIVER. WAKE UP GUYS THIS IS NOT WHAT I CALL PROMOTING THIS AWESOME SPORT IN ONE OF THE BEST UNIQUE SPOTS IN THE WORLD. ITS NO GOOD HAVING THOUSANDS OF SPECTATORS AND BEEMING FOOTAGE AROUND THE WOURLD TO MILLIONS OF VIEWERS IF THE COMPETITORS HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THE WORST POSSIBLE CONDITIONS AVAILABLE. GIVE THE COMPETITORS THE BEST POSSIBLE LOCATION AND CONDITIONS AND THE WORLD TOUR WILL THINK ABOUT COMING HERE AGAIN, ISNT THAT MORE IMPORTANT FOR KITING IN WA????

more round to the freeway on south perth for shore would have been better I guess. Not to far from the wake action 5minute car drive or a long walk. And the river is pretty fat there could hold the comp a little way out in clean air.

can the organisers be shown the error of their ways?
Can this decision be reversed
Can almost guarantee that in October, there will be no wind at that part of the river for the amount of time required to run a decent comp...
all the world class spots along the coast from margs to gnarloo.........and they pick herissson island....beauty....

holy crap! somewhere like lake monger would make more sense than herrison island. i've never ever, not once, in 20 years of wind sports seen anyone sail/kite there! we'll be the laughing stock of the world tour. someone slap the organisers around the head and change their medication.

Subject: KPWT AUSTRALIA WORLD CUP 05 !!!

2005 KITEBOARD PRO WORLD TOUR

Gravity Games H2O 2005 - presented by Vodafone

Perth Kiteboard World Cup

Herisson Island - Perth - Australia - October 6th / 9th

The KPWT and Octagon reach partnership agreement to co-organize the kitesurf event of the 2005 Gravity Games H2O scheduled october 2005 in Perth, Australia.

For the first time of its history, the Gravity Games H2O will host during its 2005 edition the Kiteboard Pro World Tour, for the Perth Kiteboard World Cup, 4th stage of the 2005 tour.

This exciting event is the result of a co-organization agreement between Octagon, organizer of the Gravity Games H2O and the KPWT, international circuit of the world cup of kiteboarding since 1999. Indeed, the two companies will join, thanks to a long-term partnership, their sport eventing experience to set up an unforgettable event, combining sport performance, thrilling interactive activities, live music and festival atmosphere.

This is also a premiere for the KPWT, which has never launched any kitesurf event in Australia. Indeed, after three first rounds in Italy, Turkey and Brazil, the Perth Kiteboard World Cup will be the first pacific stop of the year, and as such is all the more expected since Australia as a whole and Perth in particular are worldwidely known as the core center of extreme water sports.

Located on Herisson Island, which offers top riding conditions, the event will gather the top pro international kiteboarders - competiton board to be further announced - for a relentless freestyle competition with a US$ 30,000 prize money at stake; additional disciplines like kitecross are to be confirmed.

Needless to say, as one of the most famous extreme sports show worldwide since 1999,

The Gravity Games H2O, three disciplines show combining kiteboarding, wakeboarding and tow surfing, will attract dozen thousands of spectators who will enjoy the athletes stunts and the festival village.(Bmx, Skateboard...)

Besides, those who won't have the lucky opportunity to attend the Perth Kiteboard World Cup will nonetheless be able to watch the best of the action on numerous TV channels. In this respect, Octagon and the KPWT agreed on combining both their TV distributions, which will garantee the event an exceptional exposure through the main international TV networks and sport channels.

..More news coming soon..

NOT
unless of course they default to donkey races - reckon Herrison would make a great donkey circuit - now that'd be extreme.

Speechless is good - cant believe this is for real - just leaves you shakin ur head in disbelief.

Just to really echo everyone else's comments; I heard rumours about this, but can't believe the decision has been made!

An absolute shocker that will ensure *big* events don't return to WA again.

I emailed Tim Thirsk this morning and this was his response.

As you can see from the hightlighted section it has potential to move on the day. I think it would be rare to get "clean consistent wind" in this part of the river.

"Hi Crew

Herisson Island will remain as the main venue, however in case of a lack of wind or generally poor conditions then Woodies will be the back up venue so don’t panic lads all is not lost.

In order to run at Herisson Island we will need clean consistent wind otherwise we go mobile. Ian Young will be the Technical Director and he will make the call on the day.

The object is to capture some vision of the City with the kites in flight put on a bit of a spectacle; showcase the sport in the best possible way and if required move the event down to woodies and nail off a result.

You never know in October you may get reasonably good wind there; also I am investigating including kickers and sliders as part of the tournament so it may just work out.

If you would like to let me know what style of kicker and slider designs you have in mind I’ll put together a budget and present it to Octagon.

Best regards,

Tim Thirsk

Anyway, the inclusion of sliders and kickers is good! And I reckon that after the first couple of days of the comp at Herrison island, itll be held at woodies for the remaining days for sure.
