Kite boarding in Bali is a bit of an unknown thing as most people did not know what all the equipment was about and kept asking me questions.

I was hanging out to go kite boarding in Bali but had to spend time with the family as we are on holiday together.

My very good wife decided to come with me to help and not knowing where to go we went to Jimbaran bay.

It was a real spectical for the locals who didn't know what was going on. I went to the south end of the bay which was not a good idea as there was a headland about 300M further down the beach. The wind was very gusty going from 10 knots to 20 knots. I set up to the amusement of the locals and my wife launched me. On the first run out through the waves and decided I would get to some good air on a perfect ramp. I took the jump and it was fantastic then all of a sudden when I was in the air a gust of wind grabbed my kite and then took me very quickly extremely high into the air. I was over 10 metres off the water and still heading up. At this point I thought I was in real trouble as I was still close to the beach and the wind was cross on shore. I kicked off my board and then focused on getting the kite back down to the water. My heart was pumping!. To my wifes amusement the locals just thought it was a normal part of kiting as they had no understanding of what was normal. They were clapping and yelling in excitement however my wife looked at my face which was white. I kept kiting for another 30 minutes but it was gusty and the fun had been taken out of the day by my near death experience.

Maybe today I will go kiting again in Bali but I don't recommend going to the south end of Jimaran bay due to the proximity of the hill and the whirling wind which can hit hard.

Another day in Bali searching for wind

Went back to Jimbaran bay but headed for the northern end of the beach.

No idea where we were going so hook a local taxi (not a real taxi just some one offering to take you at a price). We got half way up the beach just past the hotels to find the beach absolutely covered in rubbish that had washed up, not a good place to set up but the water was clean. The northern end of the beach didn't appear to have any rubbish on it so we decided to walk up the beach to what looked like a better spot. There was less rubbish on the beach (but still a lot) but the water was churning with a hell of a lot of rubbish. If you got cut on that rubbish I think that you would be out of the water for six months trying not to loose your leg to some type of disease. I only wish that I could put photo's on this email to show people the rubbish in the waves. For anyone who has watched the pictures of the sunami when all the rubbish was floating in the water, it looked something like that.

For kiting I would rule out Jimbaran bay, a lesson learnt!

We walked up past all the seafood cafe's to the fish markets, we dived in to have looked at what was on sale. There was lots of local fish but it did not entice me to go to a cafe.

Another day in Bali tomorrow maybe there will be an opportunity.

If someone know were to go then post me some information on the beach to head to in the wet season when it is blowing directly west which is on shore for Kuta. After yesterday experience on the beach the last thing that I want to do is go out when an onshore wind is blowing as I don't feel like ending up in the markets if I get a large gust of wind on the beach which takes me off the beach. Safety first in this town

Go to Canguu, Double 6, Sanur or Nusa Dua-depending upon the wind-contact Jankie-he posts on here-he's an Italian who lives at Sanur and used to have the Kite business over that side.

There's a group of expats in Bali that kite-try hooking up with them and get the goods.

Don't really want to give too much away on an open forum, suffice to say there is OK kiting in Bali-WHEN there's wind and at the right spots at the right times.

Mate of mine lived at Jimbaran for 12 years (until mid-last year)-he's been kiting there for about 7-8 years-only in the off season/rainy season-now. It does get OK at Jimbaran-just need a better wind angle.

Hi Backflip,

Its Phil (RFW1) using my sons login.

Yes give Ary a ring, he is a top guy, he will even pick you up from the airport if you havent arranged transport, he will also take you anywhere you want besides kite surfing (Tracey is good friends with his wife Made and every year she babysits their little girl for the day, she is only 3 doesnt speak any english however just loves to spend the day with Trace getting spoilt).

you can hire kites from the Blue Oasis kite school right infront of the Sanur Beach Hotel, you walk through the main entrance of the hotel and it is straight out the front to your right on the beach. They hire Cabrinah Kites, not sure of cost but if you google blue oasis kite surf bali you can send him an email. Ive heard Ripcurl have bought the hut but I dont think they have changed the name yet. Their website has all different locations for kiting at different times during the year.
