Hi all
Just to let you know that I have started a kite chicks group for all us chicks up here between Brisbane and Noosa (because we kite in these places). We are a group that is looking to promote and encourage kitesurfing amongst women! I would like to have a group of girls that are keen to get out and kite together socially both on the weekends and during the week. Kiting is a bit of a male dominated sport and can be quite intimidating for females but I think that with a good support group we can get a great community together.

There is also a social gathering for Kiting Chicks in Noosa this weekend 7pm Kick-off and I have the number of the lady who is organising if you are interested, partners are welcome and the theme is "Free your Frills" so wear something frilly!!

If anyone around the country is interested in getting girls groups going in their area let me know and that way we can get more girls into the sport.

Look forward to hearing from all of you

That would be awesome, great idea; anyone in Perth keen then give me a shout and maybe we can sort out a national Kite Chicks network. I have a few ideas for get togethers, meets and so on.

chicks kiting is already well established in Oz with its own newsletters and tampon ads.

the person you need to chat to is Caela who's up on the Goldy now. I'll let her know.

Good idea - good at the local level but also would be pretty cool to go to something where you kited with other girls.

That Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey looked pretty sweet in the KBM writeup. If only I was a chick (though at 6'2" and 110kg I'd be a pretty scary chick ).

Definitely need more girls in the sport though.

Sounds like a great idea, I haven't seen a single "chick" kitesurfing at Maroochydore Rivermouth or Cottontree.

Is there a larger female kitesurfing community in other areas around the country and if not is there a reason for it. I see heaps more surf chicks out there each time I go out??? Is the sport too extreme and dangerous; are there lots of women who try it out and then give it up or is there just not that much interest? Maybe some of the instructors here could shed some light on ratio of male to female clients and the ration of malefemale who give up?

Well it's pretty much the same with any "extreme sport" isn't it? Skateboarding, Wakeboarding, Skiing, Snowboarding, BASE jumping, Motocross... and so on... The reason? Not sure... guys are more stubborn and it's more of a physical challange for guys to master something maybe? Guys think they will be able to get chicks by doing radical stuff where girls don't really need to do much to get guys, hehe You tell me I haven't figured it out yet..

i once heard of a mystical place called chicktopia where its always 20 knots, perfect flat blue water and all the girls kite topless and are really good at tricks and riding waves, they all said they were waiting for some guy called davespruce!

If its 20 knots all day, would you actually care about the topless chicks?

Saffer, thats a silly question. Crash your kite and hope one of the topless women come to your aide . (gf looking over my shoulder with an angry expression).

Paggy- An awesome idea, I think it will go a long way to encouraging more women in teh sport.

Hey Paggy,
What timing, I have been mulling over forming a Kitechicks group in Perth in the last few weeks! I already have a network of girls I kite and catch up with, and think I will try and do something a bit more organised after Kitestock.
A mate had a nice analogy in his head of Charlies Angels when 3 of us did a downwinder together on the weekend: we had great fun, and I think it spun out a lot of the 'dudes' on the beach to see the girls doing it for themselves!

We have noticed more and more girls out here, but not often en-masse.

Hi Ladies!

Terese (aka Terri) is the one organising the get together up at the Sunshine Coast and you'll be sure to have a good time! Teri helps me write the female kitesurfing magazine "Soulfly" which has been running for a year and a half now.

The aim of it was to meet more female kiters which has been a huge success as I only knew of 10 in sydney at the time and now we have about and 200 women on our list starting at the mid teen age. There are networks of female kiters all over the world we know of that you can tap into if you're visiting those countries. For example in the UK there is a group called the Turbulence Angels (much like Knickers Charlies Angels), we did a write up on them in the last edition! In the USA there is Kitegirl and WKA (Womens Kiteboarding Association), all doing fantastic work in the female world and definitely worth checking out. Knickers I thought you were already on our email list? Paggy if you would like a copy of the e-mag just email either of us: [email protected] or [email protected]

Trust me when I say you are far from alone in the female kiting world, girls are out there more than ever and I'm rarely the only female kiting on the beach anymore!

It's fantastic you both wanting to organise groups so if either of you need contacts of girls in your area please let us know and we can email you the details of the girls we have on our list. You'll also be able to access all the contacts around the globe we have ranging from Oz, NZ, Tonga, Dubai, Europe, UK, Ameria & the Caribbean!

Have a great time with Teri this weekend, sorry I can't come but I've got to work but I'll be there next time for sure!

Hey Orb,

There used to be a lot of female kiters taking up the sport because therir partner kites and although most of them try to get into it, they rarely stay or are just summer kiters when it's warm and clear blue skies. However nowadays there are a lot more girls giving it a go off their own backs so we are now seeing more females sticking with it and falling in love with the sport which is fantastic!

The other thing I've noticed and had quite a few requests for are female kite instructors and female kite days. it's been great to see the girls we know learning and getting to the level where they can take their IKO..... female teachers have a different approach that suits our learning curve.

I think you'll see a lot more girls out there this year and hopefully more every season!

I wish paggy, she thinks its funny everytime i say "im going to fly a kite". Besides if she starts kiting, there will be no lovely lady on the beach ready to launch and land my kite.

My Partner and I have set up a Kiteboarding School in Adelaide and we decided for her to get IKO qualified and teach. We are finding this is getting more Chicks into the sport.

Now that Caela has reminded me, there were several ladies kiting days held in South Africa while I was living there as well, and the principal editor of SA's glossy kite magazine is a girl.

We found the same thing here in Mackay. A lot of girls would get their partners lesson vouchers for fathers day and Christmas etc, but the truth about it was that they were the ones that were really interested in it. It only takes a minute with a passionate Kite girl instructor to turn their interest. Alot of girls are getting into the sport here with about 14 local girls at the moment and we have just employed another female instructor to promote it even more.

Also we have found that the guys really need to be accepting that this is a sport for the girls as well. Encouragement is the key, let them ride around your area and make them feel welcome. We have planned clinics for girls throughout winter in mackay when we get our good consistent winds. Any one interested should letus know asap. We had Cindy Mossey here last year and Kristine Boese the year before. We are working on Kristine again this year.
