I have a few small cuts in the canopy behind the leading edge on two of my kites. They are from one centimetre to 3 centimetres long. I have repaired them a few times using adhesive coated kite repair tape but this quickly starts to peel off and collect sand around the edges of the repair. I could go to a pro to do the repairs but they all seem to be hours across town. I have an industrial zig zag machine at home and thought I would do the repairs myself but I can't find anyone who sells the sail cloth.

Can someone please tell me what weight cloth should be used and where I can buy a small qantity. Just need cloth without the adhesive coating. Is the material Dacron? Teryelene? Nylon? ? ? I am happy to use one color. A very light colored neutral grey would be good.

Hi Rob,

We use Spinnaker seam tape. It is about 8mm wide, double sided, sticky as hell and we just lay it in lines across a piece of polyester rip stop to make it sticky, then rip off the backing tape and stick it to the repair. Make sure it is 1" larger than the tear in all directions and make the edges rounded so it wont peel. This usually works a treat.

You can also just sew on the stickyback insignia tape. Leave any repair in the sun to allow the glue to soften and then press the patch down with the back of a spoon on a smooth surface until the glue completely perforates the cloth.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kitehard.

I have found that Dacron is a band name for polyester. It's is used for main sails.

Spinnakers are usually made of Nylon in weights from 0.5 oz to 2.2 oz.

The stickyback repair tape used by kiters is 1.5 oz Ripstop Nylon. (spinnaker cloth)

I have decided to renew the sticky back tape repairs on my kites and this time sew around the edges. I will follow your method with sun and spoon
