Oh, Neil T., I do miss you.

I,m in rainy Zurich at the moment and the only kite repair in the whole country is in Silvaplana...2.5 hour drive. I can't get my leading edge fixed properly, not even in NY....where you are supposed to be able to get everything...arg.

I have picked up a 15cm tear on the leading edge of kite. As I am not going to try and sew it myself just yet, I'm planning on doing a glue job. What I need to know is what kind of glue to buy. The plan is to get some material for the patch...but what glue to I buy?

Heading to Africa in a few weeks and need to have my kite in tip top shape. I've only had 2 hours of kiting in 8-10 knots in 3.5 weeks now....no wind in N. America or Europe....none at all, wierd.

Gruezi,

The best system I have heard for glue repairs is "kitefix" you can get kits online and I know there are in Europe so should be able to send out to you. If not I have heard quite a lot of people using "aquaseal" to fix canopy repairs.

Check out kitefix first though

If you're really stuck for time (can't afford to wait for mail order glue to come in), then a good contact adhesive should do the job... read the label, clean both surfaces thoroughly, and make sure you have a lot of overlap on the join. I'd sew around the edges as well, even handsewing should work fine.

'Normal' glues such as epoxy, superglue, tarzan's grip etc won't work because they are too brittle.

apparently they are a kitefix dealer.

guess u could get them to mail u some stuff if they have stock. Prolly same speed from anywhere in europe though.

The stuff u want is the gluefix and some dacron tape.

u can use aquaseal (camping store) if u cant get kitefix. infact i would just get aquaseal its slower setting (12hrs) so will more then likely be stronger. Get dacron tape and tape it up from the inside. Then lay a line of aquaseal down along the cut. Place another layer of dacron down on the outside of the kite and push it down friggen hard to squish the aquaseal. Then lay a layer of aquaseal onto the dacron tape and spread it out so it overlaps onto the kite material. Saturating the tape kind of and stopping the edges of the tape from lifting up, spread it out with a business card, credit card watever. Wait 12hrs!!!

go kiting (at 3psi).

ohh yeah and clean that sucker with some kfc wipes. Kfc will give u the energy u need for this task!

Nick,
Good luck with the repair. If you get cold feet or it does not work, contact Axelair in Montpellier (France). Laurent Ness speak good English and he will be able to suggest your nearest repairer. I am sure you could post it overnight and have it back a few days later. It does not sound like you'll be missing much kiting.

I've used Aquaseal before, it works great, and will make a permanent repair with no sewing.
Make sure you put something inside the cut to stop the glue sticking the inside of the bladder together.
Put Dacron on the inside if you can.
If not, put some inside via the hole as best you can to seal out the glue, then apply glue an another patch on the outside, put a sheat of shiny plastic over the patch, then put a couple of phone books/bricks on it and let it be for 8 hrs, then peel off the shiny plastic for a perfect finish, and go fly.

Cya and

Goodwinds

You are heading to "Africa"... if that includes Cape Town, South Africa, Look up Neil @ Second Wind Sails... He can make your temporary fix a full fix, especially if you are going to go out in the strong winds/bigger swells there.

the best damn man for the job in all of Africa (and he has kite repair address labels to prove it) and very reasonable prices... Ask anyone in Cape Town, they can tell you.
