I am planning a trip to fiji in sept, anyone know of any good spots for beginner to intermediate level, and any shallow spots for the missus as she doesn't like being out of her depth until she can master upwind!

Thanks

i think this has been a question asked by quite a few people in the past. A quick search should give you some ideas, although try not to get involved in the safarigate saga.

oh no! i mentioned it again. Here follows 3 pages of tit for tat.

I am heading to the Coral Coast in about 2 1/2 weeks. Will be back around 22 August. Will be able to give a more objective report on the place after that, although I appreciate this may be leaving it a little late for you. What I have read (which is why I am going) is the coral coast gets good trade winds, 15-25 knots daily which are cross-on. The area has a flat water area as its protected by a reef about 500-700 metres off shore. There is also some swell nearby for wave riding at a place called Sigatoka River Mouth.

If you look on Kitebeaches.com there are about half a dozen beaches listed for Fiji which may also help your decision making. Fingers crossed its all good and delivers.

Cheers,

Fozzy

Just got back from 2 weeks on the coral coast. Stayed at the Shangri-La which is about 1.5 hours out of Nadi.

Was looking forward to the trades but my typical luck, the trip coincided with a high pressure system that lasted about a week and killed the wind. Pretty unusual for this time of year though apparently.

The second week the wind picked up and I managed to get a couple of good sessions in. If you are in the area you should try an area the locals call the picnic spot. It is just up from Sigatoka river mouth at the start of the sand dunes and the turnoff is between the waste disposal area and the wreckers.

The spot is a pretty big logoon and needs mid to high tide. There are a few rocks and a bit of coral on a sandy bottom, but nothing a pair of coral shoes doesn't take care of. Waste deep water nearly the whole way at high tide and surrounded by beach on 3 sides so it is good in almost any direction. There is also a beach break just around the corner that you can kite upwind to so it is a great spot.

I saw some other kiters straight out the front of the Outrigger resort as well. Looked better for advanced though as I would say there is a decent amount of coral there. Would be alright at high tide but not something you would want to drag too much in.

Cheers,

Dan

Hey Dan, I was one of the 4 kiters you would have seen in front of outrigger. That day was the best session we had on our 2 week trip.

By way of general info - 3 of us went from Sydney for 2 weeks. We only had 5 days on the water out of 13. We stayed in a house near outrigger on the coral coast.

One great place we found was Natadola beach but the cross offshore conditions make launching and landing a bit tricky. I saw nowhere around the Coral Coast that I would call suitable for a beginner.

That day at outrigger was perfect in terms of wind and tide cooperating to give us about 3 feet of water above the reef and amazing flat water. The reef break itself was agressive and tricky but certainly interesting.

I think we were unlucky with wind but that always colours your thinking about whether you would go back to a place. Fiji was great fun as I had never been there before but I will try somewhere different next year if I can get away.

See Ya

Hey, youre in luck, just returned from a trip to fiji. Got some wicked photos, and have some advise.

Was a pretty random trip, it was an unplanned exploratory trip.
Dont go to the coral coast. Its called coral coast for a reason - there is LOTS of coral. Really gnarly. We drove the whole length of it and didnt see anywhere decent.

We did end up at Safari Lodge, in Nananu - i - Ra. Its on the top of viti levu, out of the 8 days of kiting we got, 6 of these days were at Safari. Its totally geared towards kiting, with a downwinder support boat and such. We kited the point which is nice and sandy so we could wipe out without hitting coral.

We also flew down to Kadavu, a remote island south of Viti Levu. We didnt score as much wind here, and the beaches are mostly gnarly, however Kenia lodge did prove to have alot of potential. Its where the cindy mosey island oddysey went. Kadavu is an expereince, stuck in a world without modernisation. There are no roads, people live mostly off the reef. Sick.

Anyways heres some pics we got from safari. My favorite is of lance wiping out! hahaaa

Me blind judge

We are over there right now on a 2 week safari and have been getting good wind every day but one. Plenty of great spots to kite all over Fiji but it just takes a little looking to find them. Today we will be hitting the Sigatoka River mouth for some waves and tommorrow, with more crew arriving for a massive down winder from Malevu Village to the Sand Dunes and further on.

Check the site for Safari details and join us for our next one.

Cheers
