Hallo,

I am from Scandinavia and plan to travel to NZ dec/jan.
Could anybody tell me where there are some nice places for kite surfing near Christchurch or south of the city?
I don't have much experience but, I do have license for kite boarding.
Also info of board/equipment rental in Christchurch appreciated.

Thanks
Jari

Make sure you go with others over there as you're not very experienced. They will tell you what to look out for if you tell them you are new to the sport. Intro yourself via the NZ forums.

also have a quick look at http://www.nzkiter.com/ maybe.

But to answer your question, there is this perfect flat water location south east of Christchurch. (quite close actually 10kms from the middle of chch) It an estuary between South Shore and Sumner. (real nice spot in summer. you'll love it.) Heaps of kiters there too. Have fun.

yeah the pooie goes off (no pun intended).Forget board and equipment rental (never heard of kite and board rental anywhere) just buy some kite when you get there - local kite shops or trademe.co.nz

Hey bud just come back from a holiday over there. Good strong winds there. Try queenstown/wanaka Lake south from christchurch, they have a heap of lakes there seen people kite surfing all the time there.

Jeez, I dunno, I'd want a bit of local input before heading to Queenstown or Wanaka to kite. Load of other stuff to do there if it doesn't blow though.

The Canterbury Plains don't offer much for kiting below Christchurch but after that it gets interesting. Sea-breezes in summer, the NW tends to be too off-shore and gusty. Southerly also works but wet and very cold. Water temps are cold.

Recommended coastal spots Timaru, Moeraki, lots in the Catlins, also Colac Bay near Invercargill is an extreme cold-water wave spot.

Southern Lakes can be pretty extreme and the big ones are cold. I like Lake Dunstan as a cruisy spot.
