The Woodies Kitecross is being run by WAKSA - see Events page at www.waksa.org.au

Main contact is Nick Streuli but emails to [email protected] will reach him.

Please be aware all the WAKSA crew are tied up with Kitestock this weekend - give us a chance to run this event and have a breather next week and we'll start putting the Kitecross info out there :)

It is well on the way to being fully organised so don't stress!

Date is 2nd March with backup date of 9th March.

Best wishes,

Jess

Back in July last year we asked for input from people on what events they would like to see organised for the coming season, see this post
http://waksa.org.au.86.aspwebhosting.com.au/news_view.aspx?articleid=28
on the WAKSA website about it.

A State title was not something that people wanted to see organised, so we focused on the top 6 events chosen by the membership.

We were hoping to run a points system throughout the season to determine a State Champion, but due to the lack of wind this has not been possible.

More info about this can be found here
waksa.org.au.86.aspwebhosting.com.au/news_view.aspx?articleid=30

This year saw Lance Gelden organise KiteJam with the support of WAKSA to ensure that there was a Freestyle event happening this season.

If there is support for a State Titles next season then we will endeavour to deliver one.

Might I add, before people start saying 'we didn't know about the survey', that it was included in a mailout to the membership. If you want it you have to vote for it, not get on seabreeze and complain about it (this isn't directed at you Damo, but there has been a lot of flak in the past directed at WAKSA about the lack of a state titles).

kiting across woodies would be extream, even you freestyle hard nuts will find it a challange i doubt many but the richest and board hating riders will accomplish. it better start at beach 1 and end beach 3 for best result.
I think redbull and some mental medicine companies should be approched to sponsor this one. accept no substitute kiteX is weak compaired to an over land kiting race

Hi All,

Thanks to the input from WAKSA over the weekend, the kitecross format will be as follows:

1. Summary> goal is to have a fun day at Woodies.

2. This is a team event> males, females and mixed pairs. So think about partners. People can enter as often as they want and heats will be continuous with time intervals decided on the day. Best times will be updated at the main car park which will also be the site of BBQ and music.

2. Course> start Bay 1> upwind tack around buoy, then to Bay 2 for slalom, followed by upwind tack and in to Bay 3 (offshore)> through trick section (judged) and then to board drop off near jetty followed by upwind run and body drag to save the partner (in the mean time the partner will have swam out to a buoy. The team then lands and packs up to run cross country to Bay 1 where the other partner is launched and does same.

3. There will be judges at launch, land and trick section where time can be won.

This event will be free but we will need volunteers as timers and judges. If we have enough crew then we can do it in two shifts.

It's not about interpretation pal.

The event is shaping up great, heaps of volunteers already, thanks.

Course is pretty much set, but always subject to change.

Still thinking about whether or not to have an entry free of some sort to divi up among 9 top places, what y'all think? Also, should we invite the "boaties" to watch...they just love hanging out and looking with a martini in hand.

Trying to make it an event "by kiters, for kiters"...we shall see if there is wind.

So to confirm my understanding:
There's two people in each team?
Both run back to Bay 1 together to launch the guy who was "rescued"?
Then the launch assistant runs back and swims out ready to be "rescued"?
When packing up @ Bay 3 do the kites have to be fully deflated?
Using the one kite throughout?
Are foils allowed?

Sounds like fun

I'm sorry, are you trying to be funny or are you just stupid? If trying to be funny you're not pulling it off very well. If the latter, you are pulling it off extremely well.

Yeah no it's highly likely that WAKSA would arrange for an even that consisted of you "kitesurfing" on land across the actual point.

lol.
It's amazing how something as simple as the art of kiting....
can be made so complex.
Gruezi, your version of KiteX sounds more like a triathelon.
A die-athelon for kitesurfers.
A kite-athelon maybe.

I always thought KiteX was more like a type of steeplechase race comprising of 4 racers or less over inflated hurdles.
Anyhow, it's house-rules I guess.
But don't make the event too confusing, the judges are only human.

Thanks for the feedback Wave and Ian.

The whole thing really is a no brainer once you see the map........I know that text is a pain and nobody wants to read it, and they can't visualize it. As soon as I have enough input from my volunteers and WAKSA we will post the map etc.....believe me, it will be fun and not hard.

Yes Ian, all kinds of kites and boards are allowed. It is a team event (2 people), but there will be individual times recorded, but the top places will go to the team. Basically each team member goes through the course alone, but there are tasks that will need to be completed with the partner and those are Launching, Rescuing The Swimmer (partner) and Landing.

Believe me, I am trying to keep it to KISS but I also don't want anyone to be bored. We should have enough volunteers so that they only have to do 1/2 shifts and can take part in the event also.

well if you read the topic title it clearly states "Kiteacross Woodies" not kitecross.

apart from the tricks section... this is a comp about gear instead of ability, ian has a foil with a huge bar and no bladders to deflate so hes going to have a massive advantage already. people with gear that's impossible to do anything other than be a kook with will win the upwind leg [yet again i think ian has the best of the mutants out there for it] and then running in wet gear; can anyone say "beach chaff" ?

What are you talking about?!? it's a competition about gear?!? That's rubbish, the gear has nothing to do with it, or at least very little... Of course the foil not having to be deflated is one thing but apart from that it's anyones game really

Thanks David,

Registration will be on web early next week. Depending on numbers, we will also try an have registration all day at the event.

If you want to give a hand on the day that would be great, I'll put you on the list and let you know. Not going to have any "sponsors" or "demos," but kite the industry is participating in judging capacity.

Wave:calling it KiteX

Atomic: yea, its all about the gear....especially your head gear. So easy to be critical isn't it.

Just wondering if we could start a count to find out how many people are actually interested in this event.

Personally i thought it was going to be more of a course with things to jump over etc., as in what was described up until bay 3, without the body dragging(which sounds dodgy and dangerous).,

Enjoy,
Matt

I'm interested, but not too much of a fan on the body bashing, deflating/inflating and running accross beaches..... There more the sorts of things you do when there's no wind and you aren't kiting. I can see where the intent is, and don't mean to critiseze, I would rather just do the kiting aspect through a course. But that's just me....

Matt and Chop

Thanks for the feedback and I welcome it. The course will stand as it is, but as you will see, it is subject to change on the day.

We already have 20 volunteers which is cool...another 10 and we can really be flexible and have 2 full crews so everyone gets to do the course and depending on numbers, more than once.

I have incorporated some launch and land stuff for the benefit of spectators and people relatively new to the sport. The "rescue the swimmer" is a good skill to have, should be fun to watch and a good opportunity for choice pictures....it will also be good public relations for our sport.

With regard to pumping up a kite and doing a 300 meter cross country run or walk; this is not hard for fine tuned athletes like yourselves.

The event is to be a celebration of kiting and its cooperative nature and tries to reinforce certain safety procedures which may be useful. This event has not been designed for the elite in the sport to get a ranking.

Hopefully everyone will be on the water as much as they want and we get a good result at the end of the day. I know many of you are a competitive bunch and it will be interesting to see how it all goes.

We all will learn a lot doing this one and it can only get better next year, that's assuming we get some wind this year.

Mailout to WAKSA members with more details tomorrow.

Just a couple of things.

1. If you are not a WAKSA member but want to help out, you are welcome....you don't need to know much about kiting...we need timers, cooks and just happy positive people.

2. If you do not have a partner, we will figure out a fun way to pair you with a like minded person.

I enter these events not because I think I am a great kiter but because it's fun and to encourage other lady kiters to join in. So please girls don't let me be the only lady out there come and have a go.
