Check out this description of kite beach in Durban - they have guys that will pump up your kite, launch your kite for you and watch your car while you are out. How cool is that? They will also help newbies with a few tips.

Taken from http://www.ocean2air.co.za/html/durban/dbnbeaches2007.htm

"Located approx 3 km from the city center this is Durban's main kitesurfing venue. The location offers good consistent surf year round and good wave riding conditions. Durban's kitebeach is managed by the local car guards who will pump up your kite set your lines out and also help you pack away. The beach has showers and a grass area to rig up and pack up. The beach is wide enough even on a hight tide to have plenty of space for launching and landing on the beach.

The location is best in a NE'erly wind but can also support winds around to SE'erly but not SW'erly as this is an offshore wind and is very gusty. Normally on the SW downwinds are done or you can kite North of Durban. The beach is not really affected by the tide. After a few days of NE a rip does develop which makes kiting here very difficult.

Kitebeach is well managed by the resident carguards who pretty much run the beach for the kiters.Vincent and Sipho who both kite will help you set up and pack away and if you need some help when you are starting out the guys will give you a hand."

Yeah, but they pack your kite away with sand in it and knots in the lines (there is a good grassy area, so no need for the sand). Vincent and Sipho are nice guys, but I don't like anyone else pumping or rigging my kite. I want to be sure it's the right pressure and rigged correctly, it's a safety thing.

The beach also works up a big downwind sweeping current after a couple of days of NE, makes it a mission to make ground if you're borderline for power. Warner Beach just the other side of town has a bit of a lump that slows the current and a solid network of kiters who use it regularly, I like it better than Kite Beach.

300km North near the Mozambique border is Sodwana Bay, it's orders of magnitude better for kiting than anywhere near Durban, one of my favourite spots ever.
