Hi fellow Kiters!

This is not about kiteboarding in Australia but need some advice. I'll be going to Maui from mid Jun to early july & got a few questions.
1. Whats the wind condition generally like during this period of time?
2. I have a 12m 06 North Vegas & will be getting another kite, most probably the Best Waroo. Its either gonna be 7m or 9m. I ride a 132x41 board & weighs 165lbs. Shd I go for the 7 or the 9?

Received pretty diverse views from another forum so a lil confused now. Mayb someone can help me here? Thanks!

Maui in July is super windy - not the 23 knots that gets called 30 here in oz but a genuine 28 gusting to 35 - really solid stuff.

At your weight and board combo i'd be looking into a 7 or 5!

I have heard great feedback from team riders and magson the small Airush DNAs - and they are a great price right now - but good luck with whatever you get!

We had some crew come over from france here to nth wa - thinking the 12 and 9 quiver would be small enough - 12 didnt get used once - the 9 was consistentley blown off the water -7s and 5s were required - and it was only blowing a genuine 28 knots!

I was in Maui recently (april) and if anything it was windier than that trip - and in july it only just gets more full on! If you go for 12 and 9 i'd suggest you stay on oahu - the trade doesnt get the same turbo charged effect.

Also the wind in Maui is more pulsey (gusty but over longer periods) compared to what we get here in a wa seabreeze- it may huss for 15 mins and then drop to 15 knots for 10 - only to go 35 - 40 ten minutes later - something to do with how the wind runs downhill off the volcano i reckon.

Get the right gear and you'll have a blast! - although if you are chasing surf you will be dissapointed in July. Although keep an eye on the south shore for south and west swells (generated by our sthn hemisphere fronts!! and secret spots for East swells - check the map!)

Reflex is right. Pack a 7m instead of a 12. That time of year its often very windy, and can be a bit gusty, especially around the launches.

A 7mtr in June/July is the go ... but, why not wait till you get there and buy in Maui ? I was there late last year, and they have some really good deals on brand new kites especially the previous years models ... something like 30% off ... it is the home of kiteboarding so, they have the latest gear etc... plus the aussie dollar is a lot stronger now against the yank buck.

Grab a rental car at the airport - they've got heaps to choose from ... and bloody cheap ... I got a really cool Chrysler Retro for only us$18/day (brand new) - didn't book in advance either ...

If you haven't got somewhere to stay yet, then I can reccommend "MangoLani" in Paia (Paia is a really cool place to stay) ... the guy who owns it 'Dave' is a nice bloke ... go for the studio if it's still avbl ... us$100/nte ... it's just a large private house divided up into different rooms (as most accom in Maui is) ... Tell Dave, 'Buzz' (Aussie guy who lives in Thailand, and stayed there last Nov reccommended you)... check it out on www.vrbocom/67861 ... Dave's email: [email protected]

cheers

Hi All,

We are going to be in Maui mid to late July and I am now concerned about the gear we will have.

People going and gear
Myself 56kg, Hamish 78kg, John 85kg
between us we have
122,132 x 2, 152 underground flx
7, 9, 12, 16 Crossbow 1
12 Swichblade 2

I was planning on using the 122 and 7m combo but will I need something smaller or will the boys be stealing all my gear?

Thanks

dont even bother taking your 16s and 12s -you wont need them - not even close- travel light! The big fella MAY use the 9 if there is a freak drop in the wind pattern

makes you wonder about some of those " i could use by 16 bow in 30 knots" claims though - less is definitley more on the rock!
