Had a great session at Dolls today. Only trouble was every 20m a fisho had set up his rod. At least 10 of them on the beach.

How do you discourage them from setting up at our prime kiting locations, without causing an unpleasant incident?

Got hooked by a fishing boat a few years ago in a sou-easter at sans souci. I was heading back into the beach about 50 metres downwind of the boat, didn't realize he was trawling. Anyhow the hook snagged my harness and as I removed it I hooked my finger. The boat was still moving away from me and I was yelling at them to stop so I could unhook my finger - what I nightmare, was a few months before I could eat fish and chips again!

I missed dolls today because the girlfriend 'needed' to hang out and go shopping. I'm started to get pissed off that she's asking the question 'do you love kitesurfing more than me'... I just don't know how to answer it.

Were they dippin their rods at 1st groyne or wha?

p.s. Wow robbo.. crazy.. adds a whole new meaning to the kiting term unhooking

Dump her. Now. You're doing something good and healthy. She's being a bitch. Get rid of her. It will not get better.

Years ago Wayne Lynch was windsurfing and passed behind a yacht and got hooked. Nobody on the yacht noticed and he was dragged for ages until he was able to pull the hook out of his hand.

Maybe don't kite in their prime fisho locations??? You think you have more right to be at a free public beach for what reason exactly???

Can I suggest telling her, "The wind is a harsh mistress, when she calls, one must go, there is no other choice"

Disclaimer: avoid this if your girlfriend is called Gail.
I used to date a girl called Gail, her reply to the above was, "If you think the wind is a harsh mistress, that's nothing compared to having Gail as a girlfriend!"

I am sure the fishos would have been saying the same thing: damn kitesurfers getting in the way.. if only they would 'F' off.. except they realise that you both have the same rights.

Seems like something we have to deal with not complain about, it is a public place right?

Firstly, it's not a prime fishing location. Never has been, I've kited here for 9 years, it's just summer holidays. And I realise we all have equal rights to public beachs, it's just that there are many uncrowded spots where the kiters don't go where you can fish in peace.

I think it's pretty rude to walk down to a beach where many kiters are coming in and out, close to the beach and then throw a line straight into the mix. It's just disrespectful.

I am asking for constructive advice here.

Why not go and kite the uncrowded spots where kiters don't go to kite? Just because you have kited there for 9 years, doesn't mean you have more rights than anyone else. The ocean is free for all to share and let's keep it that way. If fisho's throw a line out where I am kiting it's pretty easy to avoid them, I mean once they have cast and the weight takes the line down it's only gonna be in your way from 30m max from the beach.

The government has been setting up a network of 'fisherman free zones' so kitesurfers can enjoy our great sport without fear of becoming the catch of the day.

Turns out it's good for the fish too, you'd think more fish would mean happy fishermen.....

those guys who are soaking bait at a spot where there is any watercraft traffic are not fishermen, they are dudes who have gone to a shop and bought fishing rods.

fishermen fish where there is no disturbance to the water as this scares away the fish.

I don't fish, I just don't mind sharing, unfortunately there are too many selfish people that don't these days, that's why you get so many problems at busy kite spots.

Ah so that's what that little knife blade thingy is for in my harness...?

Seriously though... Go and have a word, talk some sense into him, ask him to move somewhere where he won't risk hooking another human being. If he doesn't move, fly your kite over his head a few times lol [}:)]

Whose there first on that day? the fisherman or you?.

I say posessopm is 9/10ths of the law. If he's there fishing first then its your job to stay away from his fishing spot.

If your there first then its he can politely get the F$$K out.

I'd go and talk to the guy and ask him to move down the beach if your at the beach first. He's probably completly unaware of the room you need.

ps anyone fishing near to humans in the water is a bit of an idiot.

How far can a fisho cast his line? surely you can avoid the first 50 - 100m closest to the shore.

True, it's easy to avoid the fisho's casting out on an open beach and when I'm in the surf they are not a problem.

But many of the popular flat water spots around here have rock groynes which provide smooth water for transitions on the lee side. The guys tend to follow each other, setting up a circuit, do tricks and transitions, go out the back and repeat. The problem arrises when a fisho turns up, climbs onto the rock groyne and cast his line into the circuit without even noticing what's going on in the water.

I've lost count of the number of run-ins I've had with local fisho's on the pier. On a few occasions they've actually tried to cast and hook me, I have a couple of scars as evidence. Even if I'm there first they still get abusive. Problem is, you can't argue as they can kick up a fuss with the council, sucks.
