All,

I write to seek advice, I super keen kiter from Perth, enjoing flat water freestyle and wave riding, I ride a Switchblade 8 and 12, both on the twin tips and the surfboard.

Is there a kiting scene in Melbourne? any contact details for groups or associations. Is it true that people kite at St Kilda Beach? is this the only place to kite around Melbourne? How strong are the average breezes and what is the odds of a kite after work during the week? Is there a consistent regular wind pattern?

Are there any wave riding spots for the weekend kiting sessions?

Any info you can offer would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks very much, Alistair, 0407 483 360

www.kbv.org.au should give you all the spots for different wind directions. Brighton is quieter than St Kilda if you're looking for a quieter spot.

St kilda and brighton are not the only spots! = (crowds).
gnotuk (aspendale), rye, rosebud (flat water) and for the surf, back beach shoeram, through to portsea (peninsular) is great. You can sail on any direction for surf or flat water and as for wind stength, afternoon seabrezes (10-20 knts) always kick in this time of year.

Yes kitesurfing exists in Melbourne, and the bloody beaches are even MORE crowded than in Perth IMHO! Reason being that the number of really great days (blue skies & cross on-shore ~20 knot winds) are significantly fewer than in WA.

Whilst the average kite size in WA from my observations seemed to be ~9-10m, the average in Melbourne is closer to 12m. From that you can draw some pretty clear conclusions that whilst yes we do get a seabreeze, it's no where near as strong as Perths and not quite as reliable. Most of the time if it's a nice warm sunny day we'll get a ~10-15 knot S or SW seabreeze which is perfect for St Kilda, Brighton or Ricketts Point. Maybe once a week or so we'll get an assisted seabreeze and it'll be that magical 20 knot SW'erly. Anything Easterly and you've gotta head over the other side of the bay to Altona for a good session (~10-15 minute drive, so still nice and close).
If your a waverider your probably going to want to head down the Great Ocean Road, and whilst your down there you might also wanna check out Point Henry in Geelong for flat-water riding.

For the wind forecast i find it better to follow the BOM's Port Phillip Bay wind forecast than seabreeze's guesstimation chart.
Enjoy Melbourne! ('cos i damn well enjoyed kiting in WA!)
