Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone has any tips on kitesurfing in the Whitsundays? Shall be there on a yacht for the Christmas week, am thinking I will lug my kite gear with me. Does much kitesurfing happen there? The WindFinder report at the moment looks good at least.

Are there good launch points? Are jellyfish a problem in December?

How likely is it a huge cyclone will turn up and dump on us the whole week?!?

Thanks for your input :)

there are a few long and detailed posts with regard to the witsundays ....use the search function.

in a nutshell - the winds are a bit hit and miss
- whitehaven beach works quite well with the right winds
- i have kited off langford island a few times which at the time seemed to get a bit more wind than anywhere else as it was a NE and the wind seemed to be funnelling a few more knots between hayman and Hook islands.
- it is unlikely that there will be any other kiters.

but do search and you will get heaps more detail.

i lived on hamilton island for a while.

off the main beach there is super gusty and i wouldn't recommend it unless your reasonable advanced.

i also had the pleasure of kiting whitehaven.
I think it was Southerly, (right to left) and was/still is the best kite sesh ive ever had.

boardies, harness 12m powered and crystal blue water.

oh and no other kiters for 100's of kms.

do it.

Thanks all! Much appeciated.. :)

goudmatt: Maybe the search feature is a bit crap- I'll not a tech-tard but found no results!

kovi: a partner would be good. I'm going to have to train a family member how to launch / land me...!

Make sure you select "in the last year" for the date field of the search

Hamilton island = 8 matches
whitsunday = 5 matches
And thats just what a carpenter found

And you will be lucky to get any days kiting around then, the best time is during the winter trades.

If you expect to be in boardies, you may need to think again, you will need to be carefull of the stingers in the summer season, very carefull
I believe one type gets blown in with the northerly winds.
All the hire companies recommend them but perhaps a local will tell you whether a stinger suit is really required.

Get a stinger suit. You can hire em for 20 bucks from miss snorkel. dont get ya hopes up tho, whitehaven is the go if its on but rarely is. heaps gusty between the islands. my advice would be drink, snorkel, dive, drink, fish and drink some more. have fun...

good advice............. nothing better than sitting on the back of the boat watching the sun drop after a day of diving and snorkelling finishing off a few coldies.

So just got back from 5 days sailing around the Whitsundays -- good times!

Didn't manage to get out on my kite. I did try one day at Langford Island (off the tiny sand spit there). Thought it was actually a great spot, SE wind blowing straight onto the shore, and loads of room to myself (just making sure to stay away from the snorkelers!) but was just a few knots too low for my 10m.

Another day when I was near Whithaven and it was blowing closer to 20 knots, but was stormy and didn't feel like making my companions hanging around near a stormy beach!

On balance, still glad I lugged my gear, would have been awesome to have so much water to myself, but wouldn't have bothered for 5 days if it was going to cost me anything in excess luggage.
