Still a newbie - usued to go to Mulaloo last summer, but I've just moved up to Quinns Rocks and was wondering if there are any decent / reasonably safe places to kitesurf near here?
I've seen a guy down at Quinns Beach but its not on the WAKSA site.

Apparently the biggest danger there is hitting a boat... or getting hit by, depending on your point of view.

When the kites come out go chat to the local guys, they're an alright mob.

Avoid kiting in close between the first groyne closest to the marina and Jindalee like a bloke was tonight. The risk of destroying a kite on the razor sharp rocks in close and on the beach if something goes wrong and you can't relaunch just isn't worth it, especially when you have kms of empty beaches nearby.

Its happened before, it happened last weekend at the point and no doubt it'll happen again before summer ends.

I think there is more danger of being run over by a Foil.

Seriously though, there is plenty of space from about 200m to right of Portofino's cafe to the point is where most guys set up. Then you could go out as far as the dog beach depending on your upwind ability.

It's not a great spot. Quite bumpy. If your riding a foil it will be ok.

Cheers guys so it sounds like the beach opposite Saltys is OK to kite from - I'm not on a foil either but Mulaloo can be quite choppy and that's a 20 mins drive away

Avoid the area in front of Salty's and the playground. Thats where the groyne's start and there's generally not enough room, people swim there and erosion, even in summer, was (is??) an issue and thats why they put the new big arse sand bags in when the park fell away. You have a bit of room after the last groyne but its a longer walk down the stairs and if you go to far, you'll end up at the dog beach and it's an area with lots of sharp rocks jutting out.

If you can't go upwind yet, launch at the point and then walk back upwind in front of the park. No one will bother you and you won't be in the way. It's a fair bit choppier than mullaloo and it drops off really quickly but depth is irrelevant once you can't touch the bottom. It is a bit of a running joke but boats do occasionally come in too close on their way back to the marina.

This time of the year, i pay close attention to where i walk when i'm walking on the dune pathways...
