Our fantastic sport is still in its infancy and growing all the time.

Where do we define the line between kitesurfing and kiteboarding?

I enjoy both but my favourite would have to be a good session on the ocean with a bit of swell, on a surfboard/unstrapped with good wind to boot.

IMO
Kitesurfing is riding a surfboard without straps, in the ocean, on a wave, kite as a tow vessel to get to the waves, riding the wave under the power of the wave.

Kiteboarding is any other variation.

There are so many variations.
Is riding a TT in the surf kitesurfing or kiteboarding?
Is riding a directional board with straps, Kitesurfing?
Is tow in Surfing? surfing, or boarding? Strapped/Unstrapped?
Is tow in Surfing? not surfing because they are strapped?
When you watch the ASP World tour, do the surfers use straps and tows at Teahupoo?

Any Ideas/Opinions

I think kitesurfing and kiteboarding are the same pretty much. Just like skysurfing is called surfing, when they arent even in the water. And car surfing etc etc.
I thought about this the other day. But thats what i think.

Hi Richard,

It's pretty simple really. If you are riding waves you are kitesurfing. This is regardless of board type or strapped, unstrapped or hooked or unhooked.

How the hell does being strapped not make it surfing?

Riding flatwater is kiteboarding.

Or maybe you think that riding a skim board on flat water is surfing just because the rider is unstrapped.

I'm pretty sure that kiteboarding is a general term for the sport of being towed by a kite using a board which includes:

kite surfing
snow kiting
kite land boarding

So in other words kite surfing is a sub-set of kite boarding.

Kite surfing can then further be broken into wakestyle and surf and any combination in between regardless of what board you are using.

If it's designed to be used with a kite, it's a kiteboard, end of story.
