Vietnam and Mui ne, because of historical and geographical factors, has an extrordinary number of different religious influences, including Animism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Christianity and several indigenous belief systems such as Cao Dai.
Among the most recent religions to take hold in the coastal town is Kitesurfingism, thought to have been introduced to these windy shores by a travelling French Holy man known as Pascalus the Round.
Every windy day brings scores of devoted followers to the pilgrimage site, festooned with flags and colour, where they pump up effigies to their particular Saint, be it the Great Ozonias, Core the Invincible or Naish "the turd".
On non windy days the hours are spent studying relevant scripture and endlessly discussing how well they devoted themselves yesterday and how they think they have a great new praying position to test out tomorrow.
Numerous trips to the beach are carried out on these days where devotee's stand with either one finger in the air or both arms held out to the sides in anticipation of the wind Gods coming.
If you have long hippy length beach hair, a penchant for talking complete bollocks and an ability to wave your arms around and shout even though the person your shouting at is 600m away and can't possibly hear you, you too can become a disciple of this ever growing faith and after many days of study and pilgrimage you too can also teach Kitesurfingism to others.
