See and hear alot of comments where people come in after an hour or so on the water cause they get bored. Similar when peeps who get 20kts consistently and dont froth for the next sesh. Am i missing something - never hear that in the surf community (just whinge about crowds)?

Pretty sure the vast majority of people would go out for 3-4 hours at a time if they had the chance, this seems like a strange bunch of people you've been talking to.

Mmm yeh one of them is for sure, another would rather lift and the last one in my posse is getting a sex change in readiness for hockey season. Seriously though people seem to get disinterested if they're not progressing which obviously consumes more and mire of your time. There doesnt seem to be alot of stoke for just cruising around/boosting and catching waves

I was going to call troll on this one but... As an ex surfer the best I could manage if the crowds were low was 6 waves per hour and each wave from the time I got to my feet would last at best 20 seconds. That's if there was a swell and an off shore breeze. So one hour of surfing really equals about 2 minutes of actual surfing - if your lucky. When I kite for one hour apart from the times I fall, I am kiting, so in one hour I kite for say 50 minutes because I always try stuff and fall a lot. In summer I kite 4-6 times a week, sometimes 7. So yes after kiting 15-20 hours per week I get really tired and the excitement can ease a little.
But I always look forward to the next day

That is how it is if you occupy a human brain, which is i presume all of you.

We are all looking for excitement and when it fade we are left with either finding new ways to make it interesting or just stopping the activity all together. This is why they invented karma sutra btw ;)

When I start to get bored of kitseurfing, I just lay on the water like a starfish for a few minutes, clear my head and then get up riding and do lawn mowing for about 10-20 minutes. It is therapeutic and takes the aim away from "sh#t yeah, this is sick" to "this is very pleasant, I am enjoying this... I am glad I am not in prison, or at work... wait same thing".

My son has a new friend and after a while his dad told me he was interested in learning to kite when he learned I was into it. He said it looks like fun. I was gobsmacked. The dude is one of the top fighter jet pilots here in Sweden and he flys a fighter jet regularly, does air shows too, which means he's elite of the elite. I didn't say anything like, " if I give you a lesson, will you give me a ride? ". So go figure...anything can become mundane....

I get bored with flat water. I'm not a trickster so flat after 20 minutes or so is mind numbing. Lucky for me i'm in a wave location. But now I'm learning the hydrofoil flat is entertaining me for longer as there's a **** tone of learning curve to be done on that crazy craft.

I'm also one of those dudes that comes in after an hour. I've got 3 kids and a wife so there isn't time to spend hours at the beach. Get the hell down there, ride like f#ck for an hour get the hell home. But i'm grinning like a school boy whose just discovered lubetube when i'm out there when conditions are good.

I cant say I'm bored with it, still loving it. But have to admit the novelty has worn off compared to the first few seasons after initially getting into it when it was an obsession. If I can get two sessions in in a week in summer, particularly a massive weekend day, I'm happy to just go home from work on an additonal windy evening during the week. I've got a lot of other hobbies to keep me occupied, and I'm also fairly very lazy and so I put a lot of value into downtime. Or netflix and chill as the kids call it these days.
That said, I dont see that I'll ever quit this sport, not until I'm too old and decrepit and thats probably 30 years away so there's plenty more kiting left in me.

Even after 17 seasons Im not bored of it. There is always something new to learn. I would say lack of progression or willingness to progress through real or perceived risk causes boredom.

That being said, since late December I have caused a lower abdomen rupture(maybe a small hernia, yet to be determined) and yesterday was the first time I've been out since then (I know I shouldn't have, but I was going slightly mad).

I was appreciative just to go up and back to be honest (all tricks, even the slightest in nature are off the table). To glide across the water and feel the wind was well above boredom.

Get it it taken away from you and one relinquishes any notion of boredom.

To achieve just this every session, bliss.

I wish my whole life was like that in every respect. Pure appreciation.

1. Ride different boards.

2. Try new things.

If you do these two things and are still bored kiting you will be bored doing everything in life.

And or lack of interest. As an example, I am not interested in wake style. I look at it and think what is that spider monkey ****? Other people love it, i don't. To a lesser extent the same goes for airstyle. It looks cool when other people are doing it. But I don't enjoy the actual doing myself. I enjoy riding a wave. But I have not interest in riding like a surfer. I want to ride it like a kiter!

So I wont dedicate time to be a purist wave rider, nor will i dedicate time to do any wake style or in depth airstyle.

My progression will not be linked to those things. Which sort of limits me to a degree as far as traditional kitesurfing is concerned. However I expand my range and progress by adding alternative conditions and craft to what i do enjoy.

It has taken me a while to understand my personal joy. I call myself a terrain rider. I love to interact with a variety of different types of terrain in different conditions. It's not limited to the water or in fact kiting. But the common theme is seat of the pants riding with a challenging enviroment. That could be 5m swell epic monster waves, 30-40 knot storm onshore mush, a boosting session with sweat ramps, an epic adventure in the sand dunes in the kite buggy. Downhill runs on themountain bike, slicing through the chop on the foil, Jumping boulders on the beach with the landboard.

Ahhhh... Am I bored? No! i have a constantly changing environment with a variety of toys to explore the ever changing conditions.

But if i had Cauncy's crappola 18-25 knots of wind blow mush for months on end i might get bored with that same old same old. No wonder he has a sheep fetish. He has to entertain his brain from going mad due to the lack of variation!.

I think plummets posts are the most boring thing about kiting.

Reminds me of a budgie that spends all day chattering away to his reflection in the mirror

everyone is different. i personally continue frothing for the next session where as i know mates who are happy to pick and chose and kiting isn't the top priority, usually due to family first which i think is fair. What frustrates me the most is kite buddies who bail at the last minute when you go out of your way to have a session with them.

How lucky are we, compared to most people in the world?! Most sessions, epic or otherwise, I take a moment to appreciate just being out there slicing through the waves, in the sun, free. :-)

It's interesting people talk about needing progression to not get bored.
When I surf or kitesurf I have absolutely not a care in the world, and landing the next trick, or learning to ride a hydrofoil or spinning faster, jumping higher, none of that really matters to me.
I generally kite as alone as possible and the best moment is when something magic happens like;

-You're kiting into a golden sunset in 25+ gently flying off the wave tops and 15 flying fish emerge all around you and hover for what seems like 10 seconds+

-You boost hard in winter and get the double and triple elevator effect, then at the apex of your jump the sun busts out through a gap in the clouds and lights up everything around you (which is 15-20 metres below)

-You kite along in 40+knots in Augusta and some maniac shows up out of nowhere and megaloops off a huge kicker wave getting his feet higher than your kite on 23m lines

Yep :) but human psychology dictates that we (whether we like it or not) sooner or later end up taking things for granted and not see the beauty/novelty in them anymore. Like, I used to crave gash when I was single, and now that I have a wife... pffft I'd be surprised if i get it up once a fortnight!

Rowdy nailed it. I came from 10 years of windsurfing in waves, kited strapped surfboards for about 4 years, and now am addicted to strapless wave riding and flat water trickery. I also just got my first ever twin tip finally, and can't wait to learn some new stuff. I absolutely cannot handle missing a windy day, and I think about kiting constantly. I think my stoke grows with every new board or style I try. It's awesome to be a beginner at a new style of riding.

This is usually when you get the most stoke from anything I feel. Recently I felt this again from learning to Snowboard and learning to Foil. I'm kind of sad now though as there isn't many other new things I can try, which is why I feel the need to push myself to try new tricks, it's like a small part of that feeling you got when you learnt it to begin with.

That guy who said that just cruising around and taking in the surroundings is cool is also right I think, but that's a different type of feeling.

Been using a 10buck kids skim board from target to change things up lately. (literally a bit of 8mm ply with a slight rocker and a coat of paint and varnish) awesome fun plenty of thrills and spills in the waves.
