I'm up in Cairns at the moment for a two week course - just wondering where all the locals kite here?
I had a look around this arvo and Yorkey's Knob looked ok. It was pretty high tide though - I was thinking a downwinder from Machans beach to Yorkey's could be ok? It was pretty late and I couldn't see any kiters out. Are there any beaches where kiting is banned?
Yorkeys is the spot for Cairns kiters and unfortunately the forecast is looking very ordinary for the next week. We are at the end of our season and anything we get from here on in is a bonus.
A few of us attempted to kite Yorkeys today but it didn't deliver. The high tide during the mid afternoon makes for a very choppy ride, sand bars are covered and therefore no flat water.
There are no beaches that are banned but the other beaches are/can be very gusty due to the headlands and therefore just about everybody kites Yorkeys. If you get the chance head to Port Douglas as it really is a much better place to kite and offers far more consistent wind and isn't as choppy.
Thanks mate yeah it didn't look much good at high tide. I'll keep an eye out for you I'll be flying a 12m green helix or blue 15m ozone. Hopefully we'll get a puff of wind in the weekend!
Don't tell me you have gone and bought a big sail? Mate, I am sure we used to sail powered back in the day! Is our wind becoming more fickle with each year that passes or do we only remember the good days of years past?
I seem to be saying this every year but this has been our worst season yet!
"I seem to be saying this every year but this has been our worst season yet"
Yep by far the worst in 17 years dead set, how often have you seen me at Yorkey's this year, how often do you normally see me. I just wander down and have a look and then swear and go home
