I let my aksa/kbv lapse as a result of the (excessive) $2500 excess and no cover for normal day to day kiting, so probably only useful if you participate in kiting events.....
Are you sure about that? Seems like it would be useless for most people in that case. See below which I got from here:
http://www.aksa.com.au/Resources/Documents/KAL/1314_Kiteboarding%20Australia_Summary%20of%20Cover.pdfSCOPE OF COVER
Coverage applies whilst members are involved in sanctioned KAL
and State Association activities. These activities include all official
events, training, competition, official social functions, committee
meetings, fundraising activities and travel to and from these activities
and
kiteboarding recreationally as individuals.
Doesn't this mean you are covered for normal day to day kiting?
Yes you are right but I read it as a bit of a grey area, or a case of poor wording. If you see the first sentence:
"This insurance cover applies when members and other insured persons/entities are involved in
activities that are sanctioned by the KAL."
"
These activities include official events, training, competition, official social functions, committee meetings, fundraising activities and travel to and from these activities and and kiteboarding recreationally as individuals"
so it is not clear if you are kiting recreationally as an individual ... only if sanctioned by the KAL. So if you were kiting where you were not supposed to be (ie not sanctioned) then will you be covered?
To me it does not clearly state that it covers kiting recreational not as part of any sanctioned event so I wouldn't hang my hat on it. In court grey areas often lean towards the policyholder's benefit, but do you really want it to get to this point if you had to make a claim?
At the end of the day to me its the $2500 excess, and my home contents cover excess is $100. Maybe the AKSA cover will "understand" a kiting incident better than your average insurer, so easier to claim but why have dual coverage unless participating in events?
Here is my cover, which explicitly covers kiting!!

If you have contents cover we cover your legal liability to pay compensation for death or bodily injury
to other people, or loss or damage to their property resulting from an incident which happens
