OK boys n girls I have travelled and kited heaps so please don't preach to me. I am looking for serious intel on kiting in Vietnam. We all know that Mui Ne is the place but am looking for feedbackback from people that have actually been there.

I don't need a school. Best place to stay? I don't need a resort, so walk to the kite beach and close to night life would be nirvana.

How did you get from SGN airport to Mui Ne?

I am going in May. Winds? Kite sizes, boards, surf conditions?

Muchos gracias.

Be assured I will post lots of intel here after the trip.

he mate.

I have been to Vietnam and mui ne. However I didn't do kitesurfing back then. But I can still give you info on how to get there and where to stay:

fly in to Ho Chi Minh (saigon) and stay in District 1, which is the tourist area. There you will find heaps of travel/transport shops on every corner of the street, seriously you can't miss them. Every travel shop offers bus rides to Mui Ne. It is about a 3 to 4 hour drive if I remember correctly.

Mui Ne is a small town that stretches along the beach. There is not much to it. Some bars, hotels, restaurants and guesthouses. Don't bother booking anything in advance. Just walk around town and pick a place that you like for a good rate. They are all in walking distance from the beach. However if you really want to book in advance just do it through hostelbookers or hostelworld.

When you get off the bus there will most likely be a lot of vietnamese people trying to get you to go with them and get you to stay at their hotels. I myself wouldn't listen to them and just explore by myself. You can and most likely will get ripped off at some point of your stay in Vietnam haha but that is all part of the adventure.

All I can say is there isn't that much to do in Mui Ne besides Kitesurfing and visit sand dunes. I would recommend Kiting in Mui Ne but then also do some more traveling in Vietnam cause there are some AWESOME places:

Cu Chi tunnels: not far from Mui Ne and Ho chi Minh, these are the tunnels that the vietnamese made to fight the americans in the war. You can shoot AK47's here and tyou can actually go in to the tunnels and see all the traps that they made. Really recommended.

Nha trang: A beach town further north to Mui Ne. I prefered it to Mui ne because there is a lot more to do. Good nightlife, scuba diving, nice beach.

Hoi An: a really old colonial town, loved it.

Hanoi: in ways probably nicer than Ho chi Minh. It's really old and very Asian. Ho Chi Minh is more developed.

But the two BEST places in Vietnam. If you've got the time travel up north, maybe fly to Hanoi and see:

Halong Bay: Awesome, massive bay where all the limestone rocks come out of the water. You can do cruises through this bay. We did the Rock Long Rock hard cruise with the Hanoi backpackers Hostel. This is a booze cruise that goes for 3 days. You go wakeboarding, kayaking, they do these absolutely insane drinking games, sleep on a uninhabited island, skinny dipping in luminescent water etc.

Sapa: is a village in the mountains where there are lots of hilltribes and stuff. Absolutely beautiful place.

So in a nutshell I'd say if you are short of time. Go Kiting in Mui ne, go to the Cu chi tunnels, fly north to Hanoi and then go to Halong bay (do the booze cruise cause the other normal cruises can be boring) and go to Sapa and then fly home from Hanoi.

Hope this helped you out a bit mate. Have fun!

Good stuff from neptune. Also this is the 14th most posted topic on seabreeze so use the search.

I arrived late in the evening and couldn't be bothered arsing around, took a cab from saigon airport to Mui Ne. About $85US on the meter with a pho stop.

Neptune is right re finding rooms I would just add - if you're going for a few weeks, stay somewhere (anywhere) for first 2 nights. Hire scooter next day, scoot whole length of beach, identify nice places, rates, restaurants, kite facilities etc. Then you can move somewhere after checkout the next morning.

PS banana sized prawns taste like dry old prawn with loads of garlic butter to compensate. Stick to the normal sized ones.

Best to check windguru archives for May before building up hopes of wind, you might be on the tail end of it during May.

Went to Vietnam last year with the plan of kiting mostly at Mui Ne - loved the place but for kiting wasn't that great, it was in december, wind was pretty sh#t, heaps of learners and the most horrid beach break!! But stayed at an awesome little place on the beach called Small Garden - $10 a nite and plenty of nite life around. $3 cocktails down the road, 70c beers, awesome food. There's a bit of land that sticks out to the north - think the locals called it Malibu - and if you can get a lift over the other side of it the wind was cranking nearly every arvo - but a friend had wallet stolen there, beware the cute little kids... worth going to Mui Ne for the kite tour though - look at vietnamkitesurfingtours.com - 2 hr bus trip up north for a day kiting, it was the windiest I've ever been out in, had to borrow a 5m and was very powered up!!! beautiful flat water in front of a reef, big waves out back, small waves to the side - the most unreal spot!!! well worth the money!! also if you travel around a bit I highly recommend Hoa's Place as a sweeet place to stay - it's near DaNang, stayed a few nights, would have loved to stay a few more weeks there, had a few nice kites light wind but the most kicka%ss people you will meet over there!!! Have a lovely time!!!!
P.S. I don't think it will be windy in May!!!

Went to Mui Ne in May last year. Wasnt any good wind. I was on a 14 with a big plasma board. Would be ok in wind season. Looked like much better kiting further North of Mui Ne village ( out on point North of Mui Ne bay)

Stayed at a small resort just 100 metres past the bus stop. Was good accom with pool right on beach edge. Short motorbike ride down to gear hire places. Can hire bikes across road from resort for $5 au per day. Grace Boutique Resort - its excellent. Check trip advisor reports.

I wouldnt go back again outside of the proper wind season. Any further info needed pm me.

Cheers

Thanks to all the posters. I also suspected there may not be much wind. What about a 17 kite and 140 board-has anyone been there in May?

Any other suggestions in Asia from anyone for wind? I know Kuantan, Boracay and Phuket won't be windy then. Not interested in Taiwan or Japan. Been to Sanya and it ain't that great. Never heard Bali being mentioned as a kiting destination. I know Port Moresby and Hula will be cranking then but got PNG out of my system years ago.

Finally what about QLD in May? Rocky?

You know the dirty water that comes out the back of the washing machine after you have put the work cloths, babies nappies and the old towl the dripple lands around the toilet,..

Thats what its like in mui ne.

Enjoy dude! Australia has some of the best water, conditions and people in the world. Expect to get ripped off where ever you travel with kite gear.. And dont get your head under the water.

Yeh we also did the scooter thing.. Good idea. Also did a 4x4 trip through the sand dunes and went sand boarding in mui ne but to be honoust there isn't much to the sand dunes. A bus ride from ho chi Minh will probably only be like 5 to 10 bucks. You might even be able to get a sleeping bus with beds in it.

Ive been 3 times over the last 5 years and had friends who have gone every year - including a couple of weeks ago. May is not the season for Mui Ne - best is Jan-Feb. Can stretch to March. I think it a fantastic destination - with great wind in season - 20-25 knots, good cheap food and you can stay right on the beach. Wind is a thermal, starting light around 11am and then building. I took a 12 & 9 - good combo, but would consider adding a big kite for earlier in the day or if you get light days. If there is any cloud cover, the wind will not come in as well.

The northern end of the beach at Mui Ne has been eroded and best to stay around the mid area (my preference) or the southern end. Depends what you want to spend - range for every budget. Last time I stayed Coco Beach - expensive end, but there is still lots of beach at this area. You want to stay around here or a bit to the South - down to the Sailing Club.

There are beaches a short drive north of Mui Ne that are not bad for wave riding and you could down winders back to Mui Ne. We even negotiated for a jetski and driver to follow a group of us in case we needed. Mui Ne is a bay and doesn't get surf - more dump shore break and chop.

Getting from SGN airport to Mui Ne - main options are bus or taxi. It is about 5 hours by car, a little longer in the bus. Bus very cheap. We hire a car each time and last time arranged through the hotel we were staying at - $120. There are cheaper options, but we got a small bus to take four of us up and gear.

Jetstar of course militant with luggage. However was easy to hire gear in Mui Ne. I even hired a race board for a day - not that I could even get up on it!

Many are kiting up the coast more, but haven't been yet.

Good luck!

In May - maybe Maui (have been in May - had lots of wind and still some wave action left) or Mauritius - start of their season.
