It's probably gonna happen sooner or later, you're gonna get stitches on some part of your body from your board...

...well yesterday I managed to make a hole in my leg from my board (foot came out of binding during quick back roll and smacked into my leg on landing) kited for an hour and only noticed I was bleeding when I came in. - this all resulted in some stitches to the leg...

my main dilemma now is that the doc said no kiting for a week but a friend of mine is coming up from Adelaide for the weekend for some kiting with me...

Has anyone tried kiting 3 days after stitches and how did you keep the area dry. I'm thinking glad wrap, plaster and a steamer???

only problem is that the skin will prob sweat like a bastard and the wound will get wet from the inside out. i tore some stitches like this when i wrapped them in glad wrap and tape and then went riding a dirt bike.
there is no point suggesting staying off the water- if your mind is made up you will kite no matter what

yeh i've done similar things with stitches, depends on where they are i reckon.. If they're on a part of the leg where the skin doesn't move much i'd go it.. u can buy waterproof bandages from the chemist, i've used them before and they work alright, maybe some cloth tape over the top to stop to coming off..

I'd also dose the crap outta it with antiseptic when u come in and wouldn't kite in places known for sewerage..

i copped my board in the head (don't ask how) and got 7 stitches as a result. doc said same thing, 7 days off. but i went back out after 3 days. as long as it's saltwater (ocean) and you clean the wound thoroughly afterwards you should be fine. if you're worried coat it with betadine after the session to kill any bacteria causing infection. just be carefuly you don't rip it open again.
mine healed fine (no infection) and i went kiting 3 times before the week was up haha.

Good point about the gladwrap and sweating. The water up here is clean, but i dont know how infectous that gooey coral sperm that is in the water at the moment. Too bad silca gel is bad for you. maybe your just gunna have to drink beer for a few days sunseeker... but dont worry, ill kite twice as much on your behalf

Things are quiet at work here so I've got time to checkout some of these threads...and contribute more than previously.

Of course, the younger guys in this sport no doubt think that they're invincible and the following could only happen to us older guys!

Although it's tempting to get back on the water soon after taking an injury, may I suggest that it might be worth getting a course of antibiotics if you're planning to hit the water prematurely.

Some years ago, I got jagged by a snapshackle (whilst kiteboarding) which required surgical removal. I let the wound heal (partly) and got back onto the water as soon as I thought it would be OK.

Some weeks later I came down with an infection in the bloodstream. In my case, it nearly killed me and I was hospitalised for 6 weeks!!!

Of course, the hospital blamed the water in the bay and the environmental people blamed the hospital!

I thought I was particularly unlucky, but I've since learnt that this sort of infection is not uncommon and is capable of landing in your heart (as it did in my case) or in your brain, etc.

Doctors are particularly concerned about head and facial injuries, because an infection doesn't have to travel far to reach your brain or heart. To this day, I've been advised to take antibiotics prior to having any dental procedures done!!!

So I'd strongly recommend requesting antibiotics if you plan to return to kiteboarding sooner rather than later. Good luck and happy kiting.

Need to:

-how many stitches?
-how deep was the wound?
-How long was the wound?
-where exactly on the leg are the stitches?

There are certain nasty bacteria that survive live in the ocean but mainly enter the body through inoculation via crustacean bites and stuff like that. Cant remember the names of em but do recall that a few of them were pretty nasty.

You can tape a wound to remove all skin tension off it but do a bloody good job or ripped stitches will be the result.

I once got 11 stitches in the shin: botched jump, and landed on one of the fins of my skypirate thruster...ouch & yucky-gory.

Same orders from the doc, 7 days etc - but was out 3 days later with gladwrap and a footie shinguard, just in case I got hit in the same area again

No probs.

Hey Sunseeker
Finally something i can contribute to.
All the above are good suggestions. Obviously your not goin to stay out of the water so my recommendation would be this:
As the leg is a high tension area (meaning the skin is pulled tight over the muscle) the good doctor should've put some steristrips over the top of the wound. Keep those there, they are gold. If he didnt, buy some. Whilst your in the chemist, pick up some Melonin- non adhesive dressings, and some OpSite post op dressings. Put the melonin on top of the wound and cover with the opsite dressing. These are waterproof dressings that allow moisture to wick out of the wound. You could then cover with gladwrap and sports tape if you want.
When your done kiteing, i wouldnt suggest betadine. We try to steer clear of that now except for sugery as it kills good bacteria as well.
Mix yourself up 2 cups of warm water with (of all things) a teaspoon of salt and irrigate.

Hope that helps. Happy kiteing.
