Hi all, Im planning to come up to the sunny coast on monday. I heard that the river mouth is the best place to go. The wind graph says it will be blowining SE, I was just wondering if that spot works well for that direction and if there is anything i should know about the area before I set off, like hazards and stuff??? Thanks

SE are perfect for Maroochydore. There is a massive current in the river mouth so always be careful of that. Marrochy is always packed on the weekend so make sure you stay well clear of the flags and stay away from people in the water and on the beach. Other than that its an awesome spot, probs the best place I've kited.

You really need an outgoing tide for the rivermouth. Check out tide times. Select Mooloolaba. Water actually starts flowing out about an hour after high tide.

I second the motion... NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

As usual, stay away from the flags and ask the locals for more info. I kited there on a visit 2 months ago and found the local kiters to be very friendly and helpful with info. It is a great spot!

Is there any good beginner spots around the area but still good fun for a confident rider?

The local kite school does lessons in a part of the river on a sandbank at low tide which is a fair way away from the main crowd. If your mate can cruise up and down without losing his board and stay upwind then this part of the river may be OK if they are not doing lessons there. The reason that the rivermouth is not good for beginners is that it gets busy and the current flows fast. Assess the situation when you are there and the conditions based on your experience.

you could consider the INNER SECTION at Caloundra NOT RIGHT IN THE RIVERMOUTH ENTRANCE but further around inside the inlet seen a few people kiting in there before on a south easterly.

No sizable rivermouths suit beginners !!!!!!!!!!! as a dropped kite will spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r for the inexperienced.

Caloundra Rivermouth (Happy Valley) is not a place for unsupervised beginners. Fierce current, marker buoys and oyster covered rocks spell disaster. Last Sunday was a classic example.

Anywhere downwind from the red marker buoy around to Bills Boats is also not suitable as there is no launching, landing or downwind safety zones and there is a flagged swimming reserve.

Golden Beach on an incoming tide in a SE is probably the best option for a newbie. It's also great fun for the rest of us.

perhaps re read my post and that you have quoted, bigwavedave !

I SAID " NOT IN THE RIVERMOUTH ENTRANCE " ( HAPPY VALLEY )

I do agree Golden Beach is probably the best option... and that is what I mean when I say further around into the inlet......

There is nothing to Caloundra rivermouth BUT the entrance. There is no inner section!!! Anything downwind of the red buoy is disasterous for beginners as it is a flagged swimming zone and nothing else but boardwalks, channel markers, boat ramps and rocks.

I'm hoping Golden Beach is where you mean.

Just being specific as we are constantly rescuing newbies and the inexperienced who are attracted to Caloundra!! Last weekend was a prime example with even experienced kiters underestimating the current and wind shadows.

see www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=10394 for details.
