It looks like I might be moving to Canberra for a year with work.
Are there any lakes in the area to kite on and what is the nearest beach to kite from on the weekends.

Forgetaboutit ! Its 2 hours to the coast and I think you end up somewhere new Batemans bay - plenty ofkiting there. Stay out of lake Burley Griffin - Or you might end up in the mint !

ha ha ha ha, he he he he... kiting in Canberra!

I have lived here since I was 2 and have had a dip in Lake Burley Griffen about 3 times. Twice I came out with a bit of an ear infection. It is a little worse with the drought, if the blue/green algae doesn't get you first.

Yeah - there are some good beaches around Batemans Bay like Broulee. There are usually some helpful regulars down there. If you are up for a little more variety, my usual haunt is in and around Jervis Bay (about 3 hours drive).

Have a search through the windsurfing section of SeaBreeze and you will find that Burley Griffen is even too small for polies. The wind is highly variable and very gusty not to mention that the widest beach (if you can call it that) is about 5m x 50m surrounded by tall trees.

So, I guess I will see you down at the South Coast.... :-)

Yep, forget Canberra mate.

My worst kiting experince was on the Lake. Head to the coast on weekends, just don't look outside during the week.

Cheers,
Paul.

The lake isn't that bad. I mis-spent plenty of my youth sailing there and don't think I could blame it for any particular sickness.
That said - its a crap place to kite. If you want to ktie there you'll need a kite with a wind range of -10 to 25kts and with lines about 5m long.
You should probably get used to the idea of heading down to the coast. There are a few kiters in Canberra that do regular trips so perhaps you could hook up with them to save on petrol.

Get yourself an ATB or a kitebuggy. Go to lake george with the canberra land kiters (meet them on www.extremekites.com.au).

These guys are hitting 70kph in the buggies! That has got be enough to get your fix of adrenalin. And on an ATB, a 10ft jump above dry land will put a smile on your dial coz a stack from that height on land will hurt.

I have buggied the lake and ATB'ed the lake. It is sweet..... sooooo big and the wind is very smooth for inland.

I'm now in Canberra.
Anyone going down to Batemans/Broulee this weekend, happy to drive if anyone wants a lift.
To the regular kiters at Broulee, I had a look at the area last weekend, where do you go out from.

Welcome to Canberra! AHAHAHAHA!

I don't think there will be many kiting this weekend around Broulee. Just about everyone I spoke to said they are headed to the Mambo.

If you were down on Saturday, I'm supprised you didn't see us out. On a NE, North Broulee is a good option to start with.

Cheers,
Paul.
