Go just north of the harbour or try Blacks Beach awsum flat water spot, I have riden at blacks before and its a flat 500metre area 4ft deep at half tide, the huge sand bar shelters most.Good luck Guys.
p.s cant remember the guys name who has a shop up there -top dude!!!

I actually only just got back from mackay.... Didn't really get much wind when i was there though. But when i did get wind, i found Blacks beach was sick (my favorite spot up there) perfect behind the sand bank in a northerly and about half tide - It is posible to kite in a southerly aswell. Bucasia was nice but you really have to get the right time - water disapears real quick, and you need something around a northerly. I kited east point in a south easter, out going tide. Wasn't bad, some nice sand banks to ride behind aswell. Slade point is supossed to be good, said the locals, but i never got the chance to check it out. And definently take all of your kites. I have an 8, 14 and 16, and used them all. Check out the photo gallery for a few small pics of Blacks beach.
