Every time I go to Thredbo it blows a gale from the west. I am wondering if its possible to head off from the top of Thredbo and kite with skis over the back country.
I know winter is a long time away. Any info on where you can go?
dont know bout thredbo but i kited on my snowboard at perisher on that big open area next to the tube bit and it was pretty fun but it was way to gusty. Of behind Mt perisher there is a big open expanse that would be much better for it if you could get there.
We went up in the valley toward seaman's hut..and then further over behind it too. Veer off to the right from the top of thredbo and go over the saddle till youi can see the hut in the distance.
On the road between Perisher and Charlets pass there is a large flat area on the left(size of a small lake) that is good for kites but wind must be west or east as it is sheltered by mountains on N and S. Would be pretty gusty but when I was there it was a metre deep of the really soft stuff so it did not matter how you fell. Even face plants were ok(after you blew the snow out of your nostrils)
If you think Snow kiting is done on the flat then have a look at this site. It's from France and check out Dont Do that 4 where at the end of the video the guy is boosted for close to 1 minute coming back down behind the camera man, crossing roads and getting about 100m up in the air. THIS IS KITING.
The hangtime those guys are getting is insane !!! It doesn't show any of then actually getting pulled back up the hill though. I wonder whether they had to walk back up.
