Does anyone know where it is safe for beginners still learning to go upwind to kite on a westerly wind? We usually kite at Sandgate but would be willing to drive to a good safe spot if anyone has any tips. Thanks!

Wellington Point
But imo no westerlies are safe for beginners as they can be super gusty and strong.
Moreton island is not safe for beginners in any wind direction.
Best of grabbing a few trips up to Cairns or Port Douglas or even Mackay north over winter and ride the south easterlies.
Kiting in Brisbane between about May and August is very hit and miss and is usually only done by desperadoes or greedy lesson givers trying take your cash.
You may fluke the occasional good day but pretty rare.

Some of the better places include:
Scarborough in Redcliffe NW-N...
Inskip Point at Rainbow beach:NW-SW,
Pebble Beach on Bribie or directly opposite at the sand bar: SW-S
Beachmere just before Bribie works too: SW-E
Or Hay's inlet (in a SW'er) at Brighton if your really keen: SW-W
All of which rely on sand bar's to catch you if you can't make it up wind, or have really sketchy launch land spots... Go with a friend, and triple check your stuff before you launch.
