Whitsundays has a few good spots , but you may need a car, if your staying in Airlie Beach, you can go to Conway Beach 30km away, or there are some spots up in Bowen 60km away, I haven't been kiting on the Islands, but I have been told, Daydream is the best, all the others are too protected.
Cheers, hava great hloiday.

Forget about anywhere in shute harbour or airlie

Hill inlet at whitehaven beach on whitsunday island is a top spot with the SE trades (check the bom for hamilton island).
You must have a boat to get there.

I havn't kited daydream, but it does have a small beach, your kiting here would be done in the open water with currents and tides. I think most people would only consider this if they happen to be staying on the island. you would most likely need to supply some sort of bribe to the beach club guys, that way if something went wrong while you were out they would come and get you on one of their jetski's

Aren't you from WA, If you want a kiting holiday you could do better in your own back yard.

I kited at Whitehaven for 4 days in May of 2004 as part of a kite tour package with Traqua kite surf. You may look up there site and see if they are still running it.

I've just spent 3 weeks kiting there. Whitehaven looks awesome in the photos .....millions of sand bars providing flat water and kickers aswell but the wind was mostly dead cross-shore which put Hill Inlet right in the lee of the sand dunes just to the south. Extremely gusty and not much fun. This went on for weeks so I gave up and kited Daydream Island. If you're are living on a boat you can pay to stay on their moorings and use all the facilities ashore, including kiting off their beaches. Best SE winds off the southwestern corner. Strong currents...ebbs north and floods south. Deep water with steep drop off so nowhere really good to practise new stuff but still better than Whitehaven SE. Do not touch the rocks to the north with your feet. Conway beach on the mainland is flat with clean SE wind....but stay in the shallows (Repulse Bay = tigers)and don't get downwind into the creek...(Proserpine River =Crocs)
Good Luck

we are cruising around on a catamaran...
the thought of being around water and having good wind with no kites scares the hell out of me.... so just trying to get opinions on whether it is worth taking them or not

Nonnikers.....Jump on your cat and head south from Hamo for 53 Nm (if its not a charter that is) to Mackay.....IT"S FN AWESOME. Get in touch with the crew at Adrenalin Rush Sports and they'll line you up with local kiters like Zeke and Motto...great blokes who can show you the spots. Definately take your gear as even Conway is good if you want to stay local whitsundays.
Didn't kite Linderman so can't be sure but it didn't look very kiteable when we sailed past it.

just kite off the boat. I was there 2 yrs ago and I wasnt kiting at the time but one of the other guys was. he only got in about 4hrs of kiting total but this was because the 5 other people on the boat werent so keen on sitting out in a howling SE'er for 7 days and getting sea sick

we just followed him closely as he did a big downwinder towards haymen island and picked him up in the dinghy when he was done. the wind kicked up alot of chop though so I cant imagine it being that great.

im sure he could have kited alot more if we planned it around kiting.

I kinda run over them in a little tender and it made some rather loud noises with the motor, but didn't break nothing.

Are you still up there for August

I was in the area 5 weeks ago. East Pt at Mackay was great, same for Port Denison at Bowen. As for Conway Beach, I gave it a shot and had some fun but,it wasn't the best of the lot. The water there was very kava like and I knew crocs were a concern so I was kind of distracted! Trying to work out how I can get back up that way next winter for another blast. Chrs, Warren
