Guys - just a plea to play fair.

At Kurnell yesterday (Sunday, beautiful Noreaster, warm day, whitecaps everywhere - oops! I digress in my brackets) there were about 30 of us spread out all over and about 5 poleboarders in their groyne.

Kurnell was peaceful and it was good!...until we sent 3 kiters to learn in the windsurfer groyne. Drag about, prevent the inside poley gybes, flail your kite about - these were their instructions and they did us proud. Not only this but we also must have suggested they learn in the groyne where the power lines are closest????

Generally to the best of my knowledge there have not been any incidents between us and poleys at Kurnell. I don't think we play fair if we disturb their groyne and their very predictable reach in and out and in and out and in and out (get the drift).

So - to you experienced guys - play fair! To you learners - rather play near us so we can help if you get into trouble. Kurnell is not a great place to learn but some have done it. Just ask Mick why the one groyne is known as "Mick's Groin".

Thanks

Anthony

Three things at Kurnell you have to be wary of, Groynes sea urchins and Mick.
( hey ***** who sent them to the end 0

Fair call.

At kurnell beware of groynes, groins, power lines, pole broaders, oysters, old oyster leases, mangroves, boats, fisher-people, jetskiers who steal your board and Mick. Also the peanut gallery is particularly savage on certain parts of the beach...

Generally Kernell is not a good place to learn at all - ESPECIALLY in the pole boarder groyne as either you or your kite are directly under power lines when you launch.

Well said Blob.
Its not a place for beginners.
If you are, then head East up the beach from Mick's groin to Ricks knob and keep going. That way if you get in the **** you'll drift down into Roadblocks passage (never more than 100m offshore) and be dragged back to the beach.

Don't go East if you're a beginner as you're into the Cat club, then Poley's groin, the boat ramp and if you miss the point you've had it.

Not necessarily - you could end up at either:
- the back of quidray bay in the oyster leases - ask kitehard :-)
- towra point (make like gilligan - but where is ginger?)
- dolls point (if there is any wind in there - long swim to anywhere if you dont make it)

I'd rather take my chances in the back of quidray bay in the oyster leases than risk it at doll's point...

edit: forgot about the toxic waters in quidray - not to be underestimated!

oops my typo..should be Don't go West (not East).

Galah..been caught in those oyster leases in Quibby and there a few bitey thing up there too however as you rightly say anythings better than ending up at Dolls.

WHy is this such a big deal. I was one of those kiteboarders, I have never kited in that bay before because of the power lines but have seen others kite there before.
I launched my kite there because i don't feel like kiting with the other 30 kiters and i can set up my gear next to my car, and a safe distance from the powerlines. I used to sailboard once upon a time and have no idea why sailboarders need there own bay (old fart syndrome). If they don't like crowds get out of sydney, It is the most populated city in Australia. I don't like crowds (i realise its inevitable), theres no clubbies with flags up saying sailboarders only and quite a few of the sailboarders spoke to me and said nothing. Why didn't you speak to me!!
I mean sailboarders can go in any bay. If a kite falls out of the sky and a sailboarder has to turn then big deal its better then having a beginer amongst 30 kiters.
Anyway we should all fly together and be happy
Why don't we realise that it dosen't matter what sport you do we are just there to use the wind and have fun.

Dear Mr Death is good,

I agree we do live in a big highly populated city but that is no excuse to make the experience of living in such a city more annoying than it has to be. If you were having a picknick at your local park and a few guys came along and started playing cricket 1 metre from you when they could have easily gone 20 metres away I am sure you would feel that they were rather rude and inconsiderate. Or, if you were the only person using a large urinal in a public toilet and some guy came and stood 10cm from you, I am sure you would feel a bit concerned. I mean maybe the guy just thinks, what the hell, it's a big city, I have every right to over crowd this guy and make him feel uncomfortable......... or maybe the guy is just a German tourist, or Jeff2231.

Think about situations from the point of view of others.

lets just say you can NOT lanuch in that groyne and be a "safe" distance from the power lines.

Kite around windsurfers long enough and you will learn they are scarry to us, always popping out of nowhere when you jump / downwind / crash etc. Then again, I am sure we scare the crap out of them too.

Give them thier space, it's a dodgy groyne for us to kite in anyway beacuse of those power lines.

Dear Jefferson

I don't like cricket games next me while picknicking and i don't like kiteboarders who kite next to me when they could've gone down te beach. Thats what i did (went down the beach).
I also find that sailboarders are far more predictable then kiters ie. they go back and forth sometimes jumping 1 foot in the air (wow). Kiters are always jumping doing transitions, crashing kites etc. This makes them far more unpredictable.
Lets not make this a safety issue because safety and kurnell shouldn't be in one blog. There are powerline very close to where others kite as well!
Lets be honest sailboarder are like longboarders, they hate us, we hate them but they can't stop me from kiting in the death groin(playing with micks groin) so I'll do it.

Dear Deaf,
It's quite understandable that you want to keep away from the mob fighting for what little space there is. I can't wait for blob, col, rick and jeff to bugger off and leave the beach to me.
Anyway forget the relationship with poley's (and its always been excellent BTW) and putting aside safety (blau blau) it makes more sense to head East and use the beach up from the general mayhem. If your a beginner and ditch it far out a Kiter or poley may rescue you as you drift by and it gives you more time to rescue yourself before the beach runs out.

Anyway it'll all change soon when the Southerlies and eventually Westerlies kick in ...man if you think its dodgy now just wait.

Death

Windsurfers don't hate kiters.I think your sport is wonderful, I just prefer windsurfing.

This topic review confirms what I already knew, most kiters and considerate, aware that they do pose some danger to those around them, and thus kite in areas where if they do have a problem, they wont put others at risk.

As always, there are exceptions, ie the kiters who go too close to swimers at Wanda, and of course, people like Death. If you used to windsurf, you know that an enjoyable part of our sport is the flat water inside gybe (which generally requires the area to be free of kiters, especially learner kiters, and yes, in your witty reply be sure to mention that windsurfing is boring etc, ie show more insecurity). In essence, by kiting there, you were saying, hey my enjoyment is much more important than anyone else. And maybe it is. So Death, its not that windsurfers hate kiters, its just that most people dont like inconsiderate selfish people.

Lets not forget that for every tack/ jibe you do in flat water (at kurnell)you must do one in choppy water so i think its pretty much impossible to completely hog the flat water.

death...

its people like you who attract a negative perspective of kiting. Leave the windsurfers to their own spot (even if you think theyre sport is crap...chances are theyre better at what they do than you are at kiting anyway), theyre there to have a good time. For a small minority, however misguided their phobia of lines be, kiters scare the **** out of them, so why ruin their stoke? Show a bit of consideration yourself...wanker.

If death is so good, why dont you piss off and die so there is one less tosser in the world!

Remember the only people that can get us Kiter's banned are us Kietr's ourselves with our behaviour!

If we put others at risk and cause serious harm, it is we that get banned.

I would hate to think that immature selfish people like you cause the banning of the sport I love and am passionate about!

Just step out of your narcissistic mindset for a minute and think of potential consequences.
