going one line to self land isnt self landing either, self landing is putting the kite on the edge of the wind window and making it land so the leading edge is facing down and the wing tips are the furthest down wind.

Self-landing is any solo method that gets the kite back on the ground successfully.
Flagging the kite to a sideline is my preferred way to land my kite.
Others flag to a 5th line.....
Some flag to a centre line.....
Many finesse the kite to settle down sweetly into the wind like a seabird hunkered down facing the weather.....
A few hitch their chicken-loop up to the bullbar....

All these types of landings require practice and the gear and the site needs to suit the method.
Kite-bettys are good in theory but there's always some kiter who is last in the water with no one left at the beach.
Self-landing is empowering.

learning to self launch and especially self land is a key requisite of safe kiting. It is and will always be safer to get an assisted land form another competent kiter, but that will not always be possible, todays bows and hybrids seem to almost launch themselves and in some cases do. As usual this topic has gone way off track with the usual character assasination and retorts....pathetic....

One of the biggest issues I have observed is that with all these "safe kites" around, too many people are teaching themselves or being taught by beginners/ intermediate kiters who fail to master key competencies.
This sort of crap happend twice in a half an hour www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=7241
kitecrazzy, mabe at kitestock instead of the usual beginner lessons being offered mabe WAKSA could organize a self launch/self land/self rescue clinic, or other areas of kiting that is often overlooked..

Peace mate. If you don't want someone to launch or catch your kite. Go to an empty place and do it yourself. Just don't do it between people where you are going to hurt someone when things turn bad one day.

The rest of us will ask for assistance and give it with pleasure.

if i can L&L in 30knts no problem anyone can do it

I'm sorry mate but that is still just dangerous! Even if YOU can do it perfectly finie, doesn't mean something could snap or such. Sometimes just easier to have a mate catch you imho.

its p#%sing me off more every day that i 'am asked 3-5 times before i get my own gear rigged for a launch and same after i have finished .when all you want to do is sit down and share a few beers with your mates .
---------------------
be prepared to hear NNNNOOOOO alot more on a beach right near you this summer.

Ok I will give u that about sitting back and relaxing with a beer after a kite, but cmon, what it takes u 20sec if even that to hand a kite flip it over and walk back! Not much time to be honest.
People are always in such a constant rush these days with everything and so uptight. Who cares if you have to do that a couple of times! Sometimes its just easier to say sure, Ill help!

Each to their own I suppose.

Hey guys ! how about a bit of civility and maturity. I don't even come across this tit for tat in the surf or on the snow. Hopefully my afternoons aren't about to degenerate.
I agree everyone should know and frequently practice self L&L (when it's safe, because practice is just that, and things don't always go right). Imagine a typical day - 20 kites on the beach/in the water and they're all self L&L and someone gets it wrong .. chaos.
Locations are already under threat let's not exacerbate the situation with needless mishaps
You don't have to love your fellow kiter but care and respect cost nothing.

Hey guys,

I'm finding Waveslaves sensible and helpful posts rather disturbing. I must be in an alternative parallel universe.

I kinda miss the snide remarks, the sarcastic sniping, the strange poetic phrasing and what the hell happened to the LOL's ???

Good winds,

anyone can pull one line safety, its the first thing you learn. the question is why would you when there's some one there to catch you. the sand has shells/twigs ect on the beaches most people kite on so why do unnecessary ware to your kite like that?

I have to L&L myself too. Noone wants to ride with Bazza, the drop knee style is too much for stand up zoobas. Maybe I could hook up with the Chopster and we could have a race in L&L. Don't know where the term L&L came from but I Love & Like it.
