Just some advise about kiteing in lake Illawarra, recent water quality report suggests not to enter the water.Due to the entrance not being open, the lake has not had a decent flushout in quite some time.Work is currently been done to keep the lake open to the ocean, but has been very slow and will not be completed for some time. So at this stage it is ENTER AT OWN RISK,ear infections and irritable eye problems have been reported.Even after a decent down pour it is not advise to enter until at lest 3 days after.Alot of land owners get in the habit of dumping thier pets poo and grass clippings into the lake and this has not helped in keeping the lake clean.Best advise for people who want to kite in Westerlies are to either head for Botany Bay area or South coast (Shoalhaven Heads).

The toxic lake is back again...

If the bugs dont get you then the toxins from the local industry will - I would pretty much say NEVER kite in there unless the inlet is open and free flowing...

Well not entierly correct there Galah, there is no industry on the edge of lake. The BHP site is located on the other side of the hill near Warrawong, unless water runoff runs uphill, ill eat my kite!
Plenty of tests have been done and very little idustrial run of if any gets in the lake. The main problem is dog poo, garbage, grass clippings, shopping trollys etc,and the fact that they blocked off the other entrance to build a shopping centre $$$$(harvey norman). It was cheaper to fill it in then build a bridge, because the river bed was very wide and shallow. Then poeple started building all around it more dog poo, garbage, dog poo, grass clippings, dog poo, shopping trollys etc which add sediment into the lake blocking the only entrance at Windang.Have heavy rain for a week and waalaa instant Toxic Soup, but it gets flushed out at least,if a doesn't rain you get toxic algea this really ponky on the nose smell on all your gear, step on something sharp and its instant pain and takes weeks to heal.Mind you there are some one of the best flat water spots on the south coast, but it helps if you have a boat.

Berkley,if you head west and go past Berkley Sports club hang a left at roundabout follow to the end and there is a carpark.Nice mowed spot to launch, but you need another person to help launch and recover your kite. And to look after your car
