Was out today in 15-30 knots N at beach, 10.5 Ion2, 20m 4-line mode and tried a self land which went bad........Reli man saved me.
Had plenty of beach and walked up near dunes...the wind was strong and very gusty. Thought about how I was going to land it.
Depowed fully, dropped kite slowly to wind window, undid my donkey dick, made sure I could reach the red "oh ****" handle, then released the kite by releasing the chicken loop, then grabbed the "oh ****" handle (this should flag the kite to one line)...........however, here is where the sheeeeeeet hit the fan.
The red line to which the kite was supposed to kill the kite got wrapped around the bar, then kite death spirals in 30 knots dragging me along the sand. I finally managed to kill the kite's spiralling but was in fear of it taking off again...............and then the miracle happend.
All of a sudden the pressure on the kite was gone, I looked up and there was Reli holding my kite, and then his kite almost went down also..I unbuckled and ran to hold my kite and embrach Reli.............my hero!
Lesson learned I hope. Next time in these conditions on 4 line mode I will clip the safety leash on to the red "oh ****" handle and then release the beast! What a day....but it rocked.
Next time I will use my 7M XBow2 in such conditions and I would have had more fun. The Ion2 is a great kite for some conditions, not all.........and my landing experience was not something I want to go through again.
I guess the key lesson here is to land and launch a kite with the kite towards the waters edge and a harmless beach drag
