hi everyone

I've been windsurfing for along time now and have seen many people kiting and think it would be a great thing to do when theres not enough wind to windsurf.

I tried it on the beach a couple years ago but never in the water and enjoyed it a great deal. I was wondering if there was anything in SA that i could go and try out kitesurfing before buying one, because i want to know i can do it before spending the money and getting a kite of my own.

If anyone knows of anything in SA where i can try kiting, could you please let me know.

cheers

i'd suggest u find ur local kite store/instructor and get a lesson, prob cost $100 for round 1 1/2 hours but u get to use their gear and u get tuition which will get u going heaps quicker.. most people i know with wind sport experience and general athleticism were up and going by the end of a lesson.

All Adelaide beaches are learner friendly, cross shore/cross on and only a bit of chop to contend with. Get in contact with either Phil from the Kite Factory, Pete from Onboard or someone from glass craft to enquire about lessons. Summer breezes are perfect for it 18-23knots pretty consistantly. Lessons are the go if you dont hve contacts of your own, Glascraft may still run demo days just to try flying the kites at Henly Beach maybe I'm not sure, hope it helps.

yer i know pete relatively well he helped us with windsurfing a bit to. I dun wana spend much on lessons though. When i started out windsurfing i just rocked up to a grommie day and tried the gear out at no cost what so ever.

Is there anything still going like this in SA. It use to be run by Glasscraft (now onboard).

you don't know if ya can do it from flying a kite-its pretty easy anyway, cost is another issue-you could be going for about...$700 but that's with ****/unsafe gear and one kite and one board that once you are finished with wont be worth much at all.
best advice, if ya dont have a lot of free time and money then dont bother learning another sport.

got enough free time. and enough money for a kite i spose. All i wanted was to prove i could do it before spending money. I done want hour lessons or anything like that. Even 700 or 800 for crap gear is a lot of money. and spending that without knowing that im gona be able to kitsufe makes me nervous.

I was just trying to find out if there were any grommet days around anymore because that was where i did quite a bit of my windsurfing when i was learning and i only flew a kit once of twice on the beach. Back then i was only 8 or 9 so i didnt know anything or have even close enough money fora kite.

Windsurfing will always be my main sport aswell as my athletics. but i would love to give kiting a try to see what it is realy like. I watch guys flying up 10 to 20 feet into the air and just think it looks like an awsome sport to try out.

Ok I 100% garuntee that or a kid of your age you will pick it up in no time. You have to make the leap of faith mate. As I said there may still be demo days at Henly Beach every wednesday night so you could try that. Best thing to do is to ring each of the shops and enquire about these free grommet days because they would be the people organising them. If theres no demo days then looks like your gonna have to fork out for lessons because learners kite boarding gear gets thrashed, windsurfing learners gear not so much so. People generally aren't going to teach you to do it for free unless you got mates who do it. You could probably get away with 1 lesson anyway just to see if you like it.

I guess you just gotta make a commitment to the sport which is fair enough.

yer think your right. I give glasscraft and onboard an email or a call tomorrow or something. Thanks for the help.

I didnt know how much gear is thrashed but i suppose when i look at guys learning, the amount of kites that get crashed into sand, water, rocks and woteva, the gear really is hammered a lot.

might have to go 50-50 with my parents as a christmas present of something because theres no way i can forke out like 1000 for my own gear, on my own.

anyway cheers

Yeah its always a dilema as a youngster, when I took it up I must of been 13-14. Sell all your poley gear Try and leach as much money out of your parents as possible. Build your own plywood board if you know how. My advice, buy the newest kite you canget for all your money. Then pick up an old second hand board if you can't make your own. Just try and spend as much as you can on the kite because theres some really cheap, really **** second hand kites out there, as for boards which haven't really changed that much.

Yer making a board aint a bad idea as long as itl work. My dads dun a bit of that kinda stuff and my bro knows a bit bout it to. Me uncle works with wood everyday so i got plenty people to help me out i just neda get round to doing it. Itl give me something to do on weekends.

Will making my own board still work ok though? I would have to do a bit of research before doin in i think because i honestly donmt know that much about kiting. Always been hanging round the windsurfing guys since i was like 7.

Yeah plywood boards work great, buy some straps, pads and fins off the net for cheap and for your weight and skill I reckon something like a 130 x 38 cm board would do you fine. Put a little bit of rocker in it, not very much because plywood is very springy. Round the edges, waterproof it and yer done. Never made one myself but have ridden home mades and they work just fine.

twin tip and whole board. theres plenty of home board makers on this site and heaps of previous threads to search through. Have a look and ask someone that really knows their stuff.

ok cheers everyone. Might not get around to it fora while.

Next year we have a year to make anything we want and were allowed to use the school woodwork tech center. They can order stuff in and stuff like that. And they got a thousand tools and power tools to use. Which would probably be best and easiest.

anyway thanx again
