There's been talk lately of a Ledge to Lancelin race just for kiter's and I was wandering if there's any support for the idea and would anybody come over from the east for it. I just put up a photo we took at this year's race in photo section.

I watched the start of the windsurfers race Ledge to Lancelin earlier this year. Windsurfer numbers were down (? 50%)compared to previous years but was still a great site.

There was a kiting section some years ago however Ian Young told that sponsership fell thru so it folded.

I would be interested in a downwinder. Infact that is one of my goals this year to look into this. I go to Ledge regularly as i have a unit there . A race would be good also for the competitive minded kiters.

Id be interested to hear from people who have done it...what conditions are like on the way , how far offshore one goes , safety considerations.

Hi Guys,

The Kite class of the Ledge to Lancelin fell by the way side years ago when the insurance became too difficult. The other problem that didn't help was the fact that there was a kiter pulled up over the rocks an an expensive aerial or two was snapped of one or more of the crayboats which were positioned as rounding marks on the offshore markers.

Add to this that the polies weren't happy with kites coming in and stealing some of the limelight and it became easy for the pub owners (organisers) to put it into the too hard basket.

Problem was too many kiters without sufficient skill level entering which lead to rescues and dramas. I don't really blame em for dropping kites. Windsurfers by comparison are less than half the headache.

The race we did do was an altered course from that of the windsurfers and had been shortened. It was kinda fun but badly organised with a change to the course announced 10 minutes before the start when half the fleet were on the water etc.

I don't miss it!

Good winds,

Jeremy you must have misunderstood me, other events such as KPWT and PKRA have been a sponsorship issue in running them in WA but NOT the LTL. The last LTL in which kites particpated the Race Director was negative towards kiters, ignored advice from kiters and did just about everything possible to ensure the kite part of the event in the past was a mess.

In the end the organizers decided that kites were too much of a risk/ hassle to include kites in future LTL events.

I personally think it was a fantastic social event and is still one of the best parties on the West Coast. In it's hey day it was an awesome spectacular to see so many windsurfers from all over the world out on the water at one time.

I'd love to see ANY social racing event of this kind that brings windsurfers and kitesurfers together enjoying their passion. Like many conflicts in the world, many outsiders would say that we have WAY more in common than the things that separate us.
