I have never flown a kite but have this sudden urge to do so What I want to know is what size kite do I need and what board do I use I'm 63kg and want to kitesurf in light seabreeze's. 10-15 knots but really no more than 18-20 knots. I want to have one kite and one board. Is anyone out there using this kind of gear and weigh the same as me Is there anything i need to know I will be getting lessons Thanks

Im 67kg and struggled today in 10-15kn on a 13m and surfboard.
18-20kn is what kitings all about. You would be loving a 9m in these conditions and once you start you will never mention 10-15kn again.

Ask your instructor when you are getting your lessons for the best gear suited to you.
Try Australian Kiteboarding School

Kitesurfer, I'm going to 'take' your virginity (figuratively...ahem)

Be aware that each of the schools is affiliated with a brand and will attempt to push you in that direction. The instructor's charisma and position as 'all-knowing sage' in relation to a newbie makes for a compelling case, hard to resist. Keep a level head ...

There's also a shocking amount of brand politics and fashion spin in kiting. Once you're sucked in via the school, the brand thing is further re-inforced at the local beach (and of course online forums & magazines) by the star riders, who are inevitably affiliated with a brand. These have a sizable following, admirers who aspire to be like the star, often hoping to gain a skills advantage by flying his/her brand. It thus becomes a powerful peer pressure conundrum.

I hope this explains why brands like Slingshot, Airush, Cabhrina, Naish dominate in Perth? It's got very little to do with the quality, value, safety, customer service rethoric you're going to hear.

I would say go independant with the Best (Waroo or Yarga) or Caution. Both are excellent, surpassing the 'fashion brands' in performance, quality and value etc.

Hope this helps,
Bo

Im not a fan of big kites so I probably should have stayed home. Yes larger kites generally turn slower and in light wind you will have to generate power through turning the kite more and are harder to relaunch which gives you another thing to concentrate on while learning. An 8-10m should get you out most of the time in our seabreezes but your instructor will tell you all of this.
In regards to brands, try flying a few once youve had a few lessons, I have my recommendations but I'll let you make up your own mind.

Best kites - independent WTF
With the "Best girls" ; a bevy of sponsored riders (pardon the pun there Carl) ; more pimps than you would see on a night out at The Cross ; a hype machine that spins to self destruct speed AND more "but wait theres more" & free steak knife offers than ever seen on late night TV ..........

fair suck BO - Im not knocking the kites here but "independent" NOT

Yeah VB, chuckle.
Sometimes the most obvious is the most overlooked.
By the way, if you are thinking of a new user name VB,
how about 'Teabagger', that's probably still available.

Regards,
slave.

Hey Kitesurfer,

Im a newbie too, had my 1st lesson yesterday arvo. Was rad. I would Definitely reccomend them! Even if you think you know all there is too know, its good to get at least one lesson, coz they give you hints and tips that you generally wont learn elsewhere.
ohh im bout 67-70Kgs?, ill be getting a 10-12m as soon as i can find what im looking for. WHat ive learnt is that if your prob going to invest in multiple kites, get a slightly smaller one like a 10m, then, you can grab a 14m or something larger for the light winds.
Its heaps easier relaunching a smaller kite for sure. If you want just one kite quiver, grab a 12m. youll just have to come in sooner when the winds blow stronger.
Go for a durable, stable kite as your going to thrash it learning.

P.s theres a certain kite shop on north side of Brisbane selling Caution Kites at an awesome price! (im considering one myself).

ANywayz, hope this helps. just my opinion though.
