Has anyone any thoughts on the best line cutter and if so where I can get one from in Perth?

Mystic line cutter from Airborne in Osborne Park around $14. It's double bladed and comes in its own pouch but tends to get lost due to how it is secured in the pouch.

to be honest i dont see the use in one seeing that you can completely detatch from the kite without sacrificing lines.. that and the blades rust out after a season or two and become rather useless

With all due respect...

If you ever have the misfortune to...
crash the kite,
then get rolled in a wave,
then find yourself wrapped in lines (hey, even just one line will do it),
then surface, just in time to see the kite lift off the water and power up....

That is around the time that your thoughts (and wishes) may include a hook knife!

Actually I have both Dakine and Mystic and they have Stainless steel blades.

The double bladed ones cut through better than the single.

a couple of years back I had a kitemare where I found myself wrapped in my lines and being dragged under. Almost drowned, but somehow managed to get my head above the surface. I was able to get free just, but it was a very close call. If I had a knife that day I would have used it. It is unlikely to happen very often, if at all. But freak accidents can occur. I think carrying a knife is a good idea.

Last summer, whilst trying to help some fellow kiters that had got into trouble, I found myself about a Km offshore after sunset with my arm wrapped in the lines of a looping kite (I was also still hooked into mine which was still in the air).
I have a Dakine knife like the one in Reli's photo attached to the strap of both of my harness's and so I was able to cut myself free and kite back to shore.
The knife was probably about two years old but still cut the lines easily, it probably helped that they had heaps of tension on them. Even though the knife worked fine I went out and bought a new one to replace it, $15 (from memory) is a small price to pay for something that may save your life.

yeah, go the da kine, they are a neat little package that does'nt get in the way...I put a little smear of vasaline on the blade before you put it into the sheath...then you know it's not going to be rusty if you ever have to use it...$15 a small price to pay...those lines will go to the bone before they even look like breaking.

I think all mystic harnesses come with a hook knife in a pull-release vecro pocket. Haven't had to use it but always remind myself it's there if I'm going out in waves...

As arkgee said, even better is to smear the blades in a slobber of vaseline - that stops the salt water getting to them but does not stop you from using them.

Obviously try not to get vaso on the knife handle, because that's bad...
