What makes you think Freo's cheaper than Sydney?
Better, but probably not cheaper.

Fremantle itself is very expensive.

As to the area around it, this should give you an idea but is not an exhaustive list:

Upmarket -

http://www.realestate.com.au/rent/in-alfred+cove%3b+applecross%3b+ardross%3b+attadale%3b+bateman%3b+beaconsfield%3b+bicton%3b+brentwood%3b+/list-1?preferredState=wa&includeSurrounding=false&persistIncludeSurrounding=true

The suburbs in this list are really close to Freo and it's main kite beaches, just not as upmarket:

www.realestate.com.au/rent/in-willagee%3b+willagee+central%3b+hilton%3b+/list-1?preferredState=wa&includeSurrounding=false

Remember that driving is a lot easier then in Sydney, 10-15 kms out is still a quick drive.

Cheers.

Hey Hotracer,

Sydney might have crap wind, but I think you'll find that the cost of living is actuallymore expensive in Perth/Freo than in Sydney. From having lived in both cities, I can tell you that Perth is more expensive for just about everything especially when you're new to town and don't know where the less expensive places are.

You'll get the wind in summer and our winters are when we get all of our yearly rainfall so it's a tough winter as compared to Syd.

Good luck with your decision, but if cost is a factor, maybe have a look at Darwin or Adelaide.

Just someone else trying to get on the dockers band wagon. Perth is expensive and windless even in the summer.
