Amazes me that people who move to an area suddenly become "locals" and start talking up locals only, secret spots, two years ago no-one kited here, etc, etc.

No-one owns the beaches or seas!

Travel, search, visit, enjoy everywhere and anywhere.

I have lived in my spot for 29 years, and surfed it for over 20, Windsurfed it for 15, and now kited it for 10. I'm nearly a local, just 60 years to go!

true localism sucks

But localism to keep access has almost become an necessity in some parts, some areas in the uk have had to form clubs to keep access, if you are not a club member then no kiting. I would hate to see this occur over here.

If everyone was considerate when they go somewhere new, then there would be no issues.

When you go somewhere new, ask at the local store, on a forum or even local kiters if there are any restrictions, hidden rocks, dodgy currents or even the circuit formation to queue up for the show pony jump zone. This really helps and the locals really appreciate people being considerate.

It is amazing what people do when there favourite spot is threatened. Some areas are on a knife edge of having restrictions placed on them. And it only takes one person to ruin the hard work of a lot of "local" people who have campaigned for access at that spot.

Every where should be free to access. Just do you research first!!

In all honesty I thought a "Local" was someone who was born and raised in an area. But as far as I am concerned a public beach is just that "public"

Except in Fiji, where reefs are owned by tribes and only some people can surf some breaks... very very frustrating having to go past cloudbreak breaking perfectly on the way to a crappy Wilks passage...

Even if you rock up in your own boat!

Nothing tribal about that, or even local, just good old American imperialism. The resort "Tavarua" (=an American by the name of Jon Roseman) claims to "own" the right to surf cloudbreak.

Localism sucks. Kite anywhere, but take your rubbish with you when you go.

Take 'em with you when you go down the beach. If they're too small to pump your kite up or carry your gear for you, you could always use 'em to weight your kite own on the beach or hold your kitebag down so the wind doesn't blow it away while you're on the water

Decided 28 years ago to come on earth and I've been a local ever since...
That's summing up how I understand "localism".
I'm a local while I am wherever I am.
So in my case, I'm local everywere but nowhere in the same time, as wherever I go I'm never a local....
Great: now you guys got me all confused!!!!
What am I???????
...
And....
Does it really matter?
Local, not local, it all comes down to sharing and respecting, doesn't it?

Negligence? Pfft.....if it's good enough for the slags at the local RSL to leave their house-apes locked in the VB commy in the carpark while they pump their sole parent pension money into the pokies on Saturday night, it's good enough for the kiters

I am 3rd generation Palm Beach, Grandfather, Father now me. Lived here all my life, love my area and never intend on leaving. I've Got a hell of a lot of respect for my area, will protect it if need be (there's been the odd 3am boxer short run after f-witts vandalizing my area).

I don't know if I fit the Local stereo type that is trying to be painted here, but if you get Kiting banned at my local beach, I will be after you.

RESPECT, it's simple (for most).

There you go.
JB sums it up.

Whether you like it or not, localism exists.

It is not a bad thing. Its good to be a regular at a spot, and experience the comradeship that comes with it.

I have a couple of different spots where I consider myself "a local"

It seems a few people have a misconception about "localism".
Just being a non local is not a problem. Not showing respect to the locals is.

Just blowing in,then creating havoc(or potential havoc),maybe risking the acceptance of kiters at a spot is wrong!
People that complain about localism in kiting obviously dont come from a surfing background!

Oh locals are easy to spot... they are the hairy backed indiduals who drag their knuckles on the ground whilst claiming superiority and hassling anyone who dares to attempt "their" sport at "their spot"...

Climb back up ya local tree ya great nongs!

In this day and age where even so called locals travel to far flung exotic locations, (you know where other folk live and consider themselves locals) and expect their inflated $$$ to earn them hospitality, it is a fkn sad joke to get shirty if someone turns up and behaves resposibly (or at least tries to and excepts advice) at your favourite spot! Everyone makes stupid mistakes when they are learning, even with the utmost cautios intentions... Have you nongs forgotten so easily???

Geez fellas (and some she-nongs too) primo spots are exactly that - premium - but perfectly kiteable spots (in Perth) are all over the shop. Get over yourselves...
