I'm keen on getting into some long distance runs, mainly downwinders.
Can anyone recommend a decent board?

I want to find something that will be comfortable to ride for long periods of time, something that will chew up the miles and be good in bay chop in 15-20kts wind. As I said, will probably be downwind runs but would be good to have something that is capable of pointing high upwind incase of wind changes/sh!tty situations!

Anyone come across a good board that fits the bill?

Cheers

well best confort in any board i had is the oceans rodeo mako king. Thats like a riding a carpets ( i dont own one though)

But a TT .

For raceboards you just lose the confort. Maybe north freerace or airush sector 52 will do the job for you. They should be more confortable riding that a raceboard and point high upwind also

Abrood has nailed it, the freerace or the sector would be an excellent choice.

So which would be your preferred board? The Freerace of the Sector?

Was thinking a directional board would be the go, although the mako king looks the goods as you could still snap it around to toeside to give your back leg a rest on the long runs. Will look into it. I'm based in the UAE so i definitely don't get to try before i buy. I'll just have to run with good judgement and high recommendations!!

Hi Gorgo,

As always, it depends on exactly what you want the board to do. If you wanted the board to do big upwinders as well as all points of the sailing compass qnd conquer light wind, then the Sector is better due to it's big quad setup, high aspect, cantilevered fins, and wide hull width.

If you want speed across, or off the wind, and the ability to snap a hard carve, throw it around and have a much more loose, easy, more freeride style, then the Freerace from North is better. You can jump the Freerace and it's small enough to back roll etc whereas I wouldn't recommend it on the Sector. The Sector's big blade fins are not ideal for throwing the thing through the air.

The North is just as fast off the wind as the Sector, but is a little less technical to ride than the Sector.

Personally, I prefer the Sector because I use if for epic coastal cruising upwind on light days. The North is a hoot too, and is easier to ride for someone who has never ridden a performance directional.

PS. LOL at the red thumbs!

Hi DM,

Is the Freerace good enough in light winds for someone close to 90kg with a big kite or is it a bit too small (i.e. 8-12kn on a 17m) ?
I'm looking for a board that will still stay upwind in light wind but still be fun to carve and backroll. Not looking at doing epic upwinders or downwinders.

Holgs

I see this guy made a comment about a directional not being so good for the more downwind legs.

I see he had large fins, perhaps smaller may have been better

My two cents, if you want to go fast downwind then a strapped, quad-fin surfboard is the go.

By downwind I mean a broad reach where you can go faster than the wind. Dead downwind is always quite slow.

The nose lift helps the board skip over the chop and the fins keep it tracking fast and straight.

The straps keep you attached to the board and when you're going really fast you can levitate do long glides.

A TT is fast downwind but you can impale the tip on the back of a wave and do a face plant.

None of the raceboards I have tried (North 2009 and 2010 LTD) have been fast downwind. Unbeatable upwind but sluggishly slow downwind.

The quad surfboard is ok upwind but not as good as a flat TT or raceboard.

My mate has resurrected his old quad fin directional kiteboard from 10 years ago. That things rocks. Pretty good upwind and fast downwind.

I am keen to try the Airush Sector 52. I have ordered one but getting the latest model is proving difficult. www.airush.com/2011/products/sector/

Oh you poor thing.......... Ill swap you a few long beaches for a few of your surf breaks, the weather, the wind...etc......

Yeah i admit you do have a point as there are not that many places to come ashore during a long down winder on Maui if you have a problem its kinda beach hopping and hoping that nothing happens in between.

Id still swap though

Hi Holgs,

Sorry, I didn't notice your post until just now.

Yes the Freerace is good for a 90kg rider. That's about the same weight as me. I recently sold one to a mate in Townsville. He wanted to get into light wind kiting so hooked him up with a Freerace and a Zephyr. He's stoked on the combo. He rocks on down the beach when everyone is packing up to a chorus of "It's all over mate, you're wasting your time". He loves rigging up and going high speed cruising while everyone packs the car and heads for home.

The tail width of the Freerace is actually wider than the Sectors but isn't as wide in the middle. Once you get it on the plane, the North will go in similar winds, just not as good upwind as it has raked surf shaped style fins to make it more loose and snappy in turns.

The 2010 and 2011 North Race LTD's and also the Airush Monaro's are course boards and are not comfortable to ride for cruising. They are incredibly efficient around a course, but too painful for fun freeriding for any length of time. The Sector 60 is still my fave cruising board. I've had so many great days in 10 knots or less just cranking upwind for miles and miles.

See if you can get a demo from your local retailers to see what may work best for your size and weight. I'm sure most will be only too happy to help you out.

Cheers,

DM

LOL!!! I know the wind here is great as well as the weather.. But most people consider our launches insane.. Kihei you get to launch THROUGH coconut trees.. I stand under trees at times to launch at Kite Beach.. UNSAFE FOR PEONS!!! But generally I do not consider it inherently risky. Its a matter of kite control and stable wind like Maui has.

Failing that the surf-0-bard is the only way to go! I pretty much am die hard surfboard fan now. This surf board I have yet to find really conditions not ideal for however I am thinking of getting a little bit wider of a board that is Quad.

Heavy influenced by Australia the colors were, I learned of kite surfing in Australia so I figured my custom board should have Australian Colors.

You can always call Dan at Cardboards (site sponsor) and talk about a custom made. The guy knows his stuff and is really helpful and the boards are well priced.

I think you will find it ( yours ) is shaped by Josh Angulo, Mark Angulo is Josh's older brother and one of the greatest freestyle windsurfers of all time.

Josh is no slouch on a windsurfer either.
Either way the family has been into board shaping for many many years, so its no suprise that its probably a very good board.

Thanks Darren for that great summary of the different light wind directional boards.

Josh Angulo is only the 2003 and 2009 wave sailing world champion. Although retired know, he is still regarded as the world's best in hard core waves.

Here he is doing what he does best. Winning an epic world tour event in 2007:

Nope mine is Hand shaped by Mark Angulo.. I went to Marks house throughout the building of it. Actually Josh wanted my board :)

http://www.markangulo.com/home/ He does not list kiteboards but he made it.

But yeah they are really a cool family.
