That was one the most amazing vids I have seen in a while. He is so calm, id be constantly looking behind me. The cameraman and him must have signals and be watching each others backs. See the part when it is going to try and eat him whilst he is swimming away from it, but as soon as he faces it head on it stops.

Also Pearls comment "Incredible! After he ditches the speargun, what is he holding? Looks like a little butter knife!" They actually grab their nose to scare them away. Sharks are very sensitive on their nose. A little prong in the side wouldnt do much to a beast like that. See how calm the sharks are too... they havent a worry in the world, they truly are the kings of the sea (as with those boys swimming with them that is seriously big kahunas to be doing that)

Hey Pearl,

Pretty sure he ditched the spear gun in favour of an "iki spike". It's a small pointed stainless shaft designed to kill a fish by spiking it in the brain to stop its fighting (iki jimi).

It would be useless to kill the shark but a quick prod into it's sensitive snout is a good deterent, unless the shark really wanted him for lunch in which case he would be f&%ked!

Good winds,

I spear and carry one, and am blown away, that is all he has. 2 grand blancs & 1 oversize nail?? I was thinking it must have been some kind of small (electric) cattle type probe. Gutsy, gutsy stuff.

most of the time the sharks look very relaxed- however there is a few times when they start to look aggressive- arching the back, and cutting smaller circles around the diver... this is when it would have been a good time to get out....
made me feel very nervous watching it.

friends in south africa have to do that sort of thing while spear fishing if the boat is too far away. generally they are well fed and are just curious , having 1.5m fins also is a deterrent.
would post some pics but cbf uploading them ect

it was cool but the sharks did look very dopey so i guess they werent hungry i think with the diver hitting the shark on the nose taught the shark from a young age that hes gona get owned if he messes with that diver

if anyone has any doubts about the type of shark in this video, then don't !

It's a great White !

The video from this link is from a documentary from French TV (Canal 3)

From the video, at 1.44 you get to see the distiguishing features of the great white as identified by the distinct keel before the broad crescent shaped tail

At 2.29 you see the diver starts to grab the dorsal fin of the GW and you again see the keel (feature of the great white)

Great white sharks have a torpedo-shaped body,
coloured grey to grey-brown on the upper surface
and white below. They have large, serrated
triangular teeth, very small second dorsal and anal
fins, and a distinct keel before the broad crescent shaped
tail. They are occasionally mistaken for the
mako shark, but the mako’s upper body is blue and
they have long slender pointed teeth.
