Hey guys im 14 and hav been kiteboarding for almost a year now
the other day i was at our local kitebeach we were kiting in strong winds like 20-25kts+ , and i had only a largish kite for my weight so i asked one of the guys if i could borrow his kite he kindly obliged, however on my way in to hand the kite back to him after using it, i tried an un-hooked raily on my way to the shore and my kite luffed out and fell out of the sky i walked a short way and met him i handed him the bar and went to retreive the kite which was blowing towards some reeds wen i got to it i attempted to flip it over and was hit by a gust of wind which blew it into a nearby tree branch and put a rip in the kite. The rip was a clean tear about 10 cm long by about the same in and L shape between the 2nd and 3rd struts now this i know is reparable but he wants me to buy his entire kite off him which is going to cost me around $1500 which is money i dont have i hav offered to pay for the repair but he wants me to buy the kite off him. What should i do, im not sure whether hes trying to take advantage of me as im pretty much only a kid or wat afterall it was only an accident and i truly didnt mean to. so anyway any opinions as to wat i should do waould be great cheers

Well its worth about $800 second hand. prolly about $750 with a smallish repair.

repair it and give him 50$.

I took a whole panel out of poor rellies kite when he let me borrow it. I felt ****en horrible, but he can borrow one of my kites and do the same if he wants.

yeh but the damage is partially my fault, haha no im not really willing to by the kite off him but id b fine to pay for a repair

Its a hard one but if i lend one of my kites out and i know that they are rough with kites then i make sure i say "you brake it you brought it". If i lend it out and some one accidentally rips it or brakes it then i just take it on the chin as one of those things that happens. Tell this guy that he is dreaming, and that's the risk you take when you lend out kites. Give him $20 bucks and that's it.

Had a old guy drive over my new board once and got nothing out of him at all and nothing i could do about at all. So this guys dreaming. Don't give in.

Good analogy. Say that to him, or since your 14 get your dad to back you

Its not a good idea to borrow kites in the first place.

Some people go by the rule "if you break it,its yours '

I know thats the rule at a shop I know that lets you demo kites.

Anyway,just offer to pay for the repair.Its not brand new anyway.

Let some of the respected kiters in your area hear both sides and make a dision on there advise. A good repare will not afect the Kite
and would not reduces the value of a second hand kite. He would be hard for him to get $800. Good luck Tom

Had you been hooked in, and thus performed a "gayley" i'd say you'd definately be up for the price of the new kite, and perhaps a $200 fine for embarrasing yourself by performing one of the most criminal moves in kiteboarding...

Otherwise i'd agree with the rest, you aren't liable for a thing, but the price of the repair and an apology is a fair deal.... ay

If he lent you his car, and you crashed it - would you pay for the damage or buy him a new one?

wait im not really following how this happened? so u gave the dude the kite bar? then it blew away as u tried picking up the kite 4 him? it almost sounds like it was his mistake anyway yeah just offer to pay 4 repairs it is a small ass rip neway, i ripped my 9m waroo from leading to trailing edge RIGHT ontop of a strut and its repaired n still boosting huge in 30knots :D having repairs on kites has almost no affect if any at all. tell him 2 eat doodle if he says no

If your story is true and you gave him the bar and went to get his kite while it was still on the water, then it blew up into a tree? Sounds like his problem for not getting it off the water while you were swimming in. Unless he was already out of his wettie. Id say your a top bloke for offering to get it fixed, even better if you get your old man to buy him a six pack.

If hes not happy with that, hes a bit of a knob end. Take it as a lesson though not to lend other peoples gear.
