ok im bored, and i need an ARC or something similar,
so i was thinking, a few people have made their own kites like AZZA, but they are all inflato's,

has anyone ever made their own trainer foil? it seems more simple than an inflatable to me cos theres no bladders, valves, or struts or anything...
if you have, could you put some picys up?

There's a Yahoo Group for foilmakers (search Yahoo Groups). They have some ready to make plans available for downlaod, there is free software, building guides, and plenty of what not to do's, etc.

I was looking for an ARC design some time back, but there was nothing that was really ready to just make and fly then... might be now though. There are some really good plans available for bridled foils though.

For practice you could make a NASA Para-wing (NPW), just to get used to the construction methods, these are single skinned soft foils. They pull like trucks and are almost indestructible. A good trainer, I've seen schools using them, for first time fliers... also very good when you want an upper body workout.

Hey Rhys!
You're getting into a whole new world of kite geekyness now!
Google it.
There's a few software programs you can download that generate patterns for foils according to your design. It might be harder than you think, but it's totally cool you're thinking of building one.
I suspect when you're finished it would seem a lot easier to spend $200 on a secondhand ARC 460. Try your "wanted" ad again....

Geek is Good!

Never be just satisfied with anything, tweak it!

How do you think things keep getting better and better?!?

Go for it! Fark the critics!

Is there something a bit easier.
You know like a recipe list for making a foil kite
Step 1. Buy stuff......
Step 2 Cut stuff........ etc etc etc
I have an empty garage, and a work table, and a sewing machine i would like to use.
Carbine.....can you do this stuff??

There are a couple of really interesting designs coming out - something like a hybrid foil/bow type prototype.

Be warned - when making your own kite there will be a lot of sewing involved so it's probably worth whipping up a quick dress or apron to see if you like sewing first.

What size waist do you have Munter? There's some taffeta left over from one of my daughters' frocks, I could whip up a mini' for you in no time.

I got a feeling your daughter gets ridiculed at school, if they are anything like frankenkite.

OK Spacemonkey!,

I give in... I'll make you a frock too. But only if you'll sing and dance for us.

I can see your name up in lights already...
