Just wondering if anyone here knows what the current rules are in relation the speed of powered craft when in close proximity to other craft (ie kiters). During the last few sessions at one of my fave spots, we've had to put up with jet ski riders repeatedly blasting between/around us at full throttle. I'm curious to know if there's a rule/law that says they're supposed to stick to idle speed or whatever within a certain distance.

The rules in this link are for NSW and apply to PWC (seadoo, jetskis, etc)

Galah,

As a matter of fact it worked out pretty well on the Aust W'end at Brighton when the water authorities came and fined all Jetskiers in Brighton Le Sands for being parked within the range.

Made all of us chuckle at the result for once

Hey Mr Bonk,

The police hate Jet Skiers almost as much as the rest of the community and as such take great pleasure in busting them for inappropriate and reckless behaviour. All you need to do is take down their rego numbers off the side of their ski and then ring the local water police. They are used to these calls.

The water police are usually only 20-30 minutes away and usually rock up with a fresh citation book and a stern attitude. I've done this before when Jet Skis have been slaloming in between students and swimmers outside of their allocated area.

Traveling at 50 knots 30 feet from the waters edge in a family swimming zone is ridiculous, irresponsible and highly illegal. You would be doing the community a service. I don't hate all jet skiers, just the ones who act foolishly and give the others a bad name.

Good winds,

Man oh man.....looks like these guys have been breaking just about every rule in the book!

The spot I'm talking about is Elliot Heads, just near Bundaberg here in QLD. It's a river mouth but most of the kiting gets done a little bit further down the river. It's pretty narrow there.....way less than 30M at low tide I'd say.....so these guys really shouldn't even *be* there. At one point there were 4 or 5 on the go (wasn't really paying much attention until they got close enough to worry us) and I had to motion/yell at a couple to slow down as they blasted past at full noise. That seemed to work for a while, but eventually they were back to blasting straight up the river at full speed.

Like I said on Kiteforum just now, even though I personally hate the things (noisy, smelly pollution generators is all they are), I don't mind if they ride where we are.....just as long as they take it easy when they're close!

Hey.....do I know you? I'm the guy who's been teaching my GF at the far end of the beach (generally on either a 10 or 8M Best Nemesis).

You might want to use some tact with this one. These very same rules can apply to kiteboarders as well. Distance from shore, other craft and speed restrictions as well. Also the "no freestyling" law that applies in some waters.

Yeah I know, but it's only the speed thing in such close proximity that I'm concerned about. The thing is, there's vast amounts of open water in the river mouth where they could go flat out all day and never bother a soul if they wanted to. There's simply no need for them to be moving at such high speed in the river where everyone else (both kiters and swimmers) is.
