Just curious if any instructors/mates have given the old 'Maybe you should try another sport' speech. Because a student/mate is unsafe, not switched on enough or looks like they maybe a danger to themselves or others in the future. Or do you persevere with everyone regardless and just turn them loose when you've/they've had enough????

G'Day Surgeon,

Every person learns in a different way so it is a matter of finding the way to get the message through to the individual so as they understand.

I have had one or two students over the last nearly 5 years which have been very frustrating but in the end I have figured out the way to connect with them and they have succeeded and have eventually proven to be good safe kiters.

Sometimes the toughest are the most rewarding. And I have never had anyone who was unteachable or who "didn't get it". It is usually the fault of the instructor for not putting the instruction into a way the student can relate , not the student being incapable.

This is one of the skills we teach in the IKO Instructor Training Course under the Psychology of teaching section.

Kitehard summed it up well.
I used to be a paragliding instructor and in that sport when we had a difficult student , we would pass them on to another instructor for assessment. A different personality type is often all it takes to get the message through.
If you have to suggest another hobby try kitedriving.
Dont turn him loose if he is dangerous as people will go Surgeon taught that bloke.
