Hi Guys,

I am possibly going to be moving to Melbourne at the end of September and am unsure of where to live.
Where would be good to live thats close to a surf beach and kite area? Am going to be working in the city so needs to be in a reasonable travelling distance.

Someone mentioned ocean grove to me. Any thoughts on it?

Anyway, Any info would be greatly apptrciate.

Cheers
Marc

Ocean Grove is a fantastic spot but it takes about 1.25 hours to drive to the westgate bridge. If your up for the commute then go for it.

There is good access to wave and flat water spots for nearly all wind directions

Melbourne is on a bay.
If you are working in Melbourne then you want the kiting spot which is Brighton or St Kilda or recently more guys are also using Port Melbourne and Albert park as well.
No surf just lots of kites. (over 100 on a weekend) Plenty of chop though once you are out of the St Kilda marina.

St Kilda, Middle Park, Elwood, Port Melb, Albert Park are all going to have you only metres from the beach (not surf)

If you want to commute 1 1/2 hours each way each day, think of the kiting time you will miss. Travel to the surf on weekends if that's your thing. This is what lots of the guys do so they kite weeknights in the bay and go to the peninsula on weekends

Cheers

John

plenty of spots to kite on the mornington peninsula. if you live somewhere like mornington you are 20 mins from the surf, 10 mins to good kiting spots, and 40 mins to the centre of melbourne.
also the water is filthy at all the kiting spots close to the city, (eg st kilda, brighton, altona) and the crowds are a shocker. the further south you go the better in my opinion.

Melbourne is a dump!
There are no surf beaches close by!

Change your plans and go to Sydney. Everything is there.
Or W.A. would be good.

Yes,I have a dislike of the place.

Everone knows that Sidney is MUCH better!

Melbourne is aesthetically challenged. The bay they ride in is like Botany Bay.OK if it's all you got.

The original question asked about surf beaches. The replies were about St Kilda. No surf there! Plus its a dump!

Melbourne versus Sydney ? Sydaney!!!!

Holden versus Ford ? HOLDEN !!

The peninsular is a fantastic place. It has surf on one side (portsea to shoreme) and kilometres of ridable flat water (rye to frankston), that is useable in any wind direction. Happy kiting

I'm relocating to Melbourne as well (from Cairns) but taking about 6-12 months to get there, hoping to kitesurf every beach in between.
Just at the final stages of pimping out the motorhome, and will regularly blog about various beaches, conditions and locals I encounter. Should be a bit of fun.

I wouldn't say StKilda is the primo spot, Altona, Brighton, Hampton, Rosebud, all good. No surf though.

StKilda is way crowded with a bad vibe, been there a couple of times but never again, except to finish downwinders.

PS: Don't they have fires where your from??
