Hi Guys

I have been transferred to Australia (Melbourne) for 3 years and arrive in July, which is pretty much smack in the middle of winter. Whats the winter kiting like in Melbourne?

I also need to replace my Neil Pryde 5/3 which is pretty shredded, and was wondering whether it was worth going for a drysuit for Melbourne in winter if its really cold. Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,

Saffer

In winter it's mainly northerlies or squally southerlies with rain (not the best). Geelong or rye is a great place to catch those northerlies if you're up for a bit of a drive.

Winter kiting can be pretty hit & miss. Cold, squally. I am just a bit fussier about the days I go out. I kite through winter though. Hard to get out after work cause it gets dark early.

I used 3/2 all last winter and it was a bit cold. Used to have a 4/3 which was perfect (too poor though). Only ever heard of 1 guy (a pom) who used a dry suit in Melb. I don't use booties, but have often thought about it when mt feet go numb & blue.

The 3/2 steamer is perfect for Spring/Autumn which is why I put up with it last winter.

You will be hard pressed to mantain your kitesurfing in Melbourne over winter. I was happy I only had to spend just one winter in Melbourne.
Before I left in December the start to summer was pretty average as well. I wonder how the summer has been up to now ? I can imagine pretty up and down judging by the extremes in temp I see on the media. Not the best city for k s in Australia. but hey - better than Alice Springs !

I've got a fully sealed ripcurl 3/2 and as it's sealed you get really hot. It is as good as.

As you are not submersed in the water you dont need a 4/3

Mate, Melbourne in winter, maybe you should change your call sign to 'Suffer'.

Go the 4/3 mate, I'm from tassie, and I know you'll love a thicker suit in winter.

Thanks. Will go for the 4/3. I'm a scrawny bastard so I need any extra insulation I can get. I also have a 3mm for warmer days so thats not a major.

Winter in Melbourne can't be worse than inland South Africa so it might be a step up from where I am. No wind in summer, and in winter it blows every weekend but nearest spot is an hour drive, but is gusty and cold (-12C) overnight. At least I also have the summers in Melbourne to look forward to.
